Anyone gone from C5 RS6 to B7 RS4?

Post by andyt » Mon Dec 30, 2013 1:12 am

This is a path I'm considering taking, although I sold my RS6 18 months back.. Just wondering what the ownership is like - both bad and good, compared to the RS6. I remember the troubles with the RS6, the DRC, the intercoolers, the gearbox, the "nobbly bit", but by god I remember the power. Like thunder from under the bonnet. TBF, mine was also mapped to 500bhp. What's the RS4 like in comparison? What's like to live with, and how wide is the smile? I get the impression that because it's NA, there's not a great deal of improvements you can do this side of a supercharger?

I'm actually thinking of a softtop because I fancy something a bit different to what I've had before and also AIUI, that's my only route for getting the newest one possible?

Thanks!

The cabbie is ok if you are ghay and like your cars to feel like a plate of jelly (I've had x2 RS 4 cabs btw)

The saloon is the sweet spot, and although less power and much less torque than the RS6, it's a much more satisfying, sporty drive ... I've had x2 RS4 saloon's and would have another in a heartbeat.

Running costs, a different planet compared to the RS6, pretty much bullet proof if you find a good one and look after it

Cheers for the replies guys. Is the cab really so wobbly? I notice that the Evo magazine summary in the back is "wibble wobble, wibble wobble, jelly on a plate". This sounds like the DRC has failed! My RS6 wasn't the most nimble around corners but I didn't really mind that. I guess I need to drive a cab to find out whether it's bad or not. Does a coilover upgrade sort it out?

The problem with the cab is a reduction in structural rigidity because the roof has been chopped off. It is also a bit heavier because of extra reinforcement in the floor, the weight hood/mechanism and I think the bonnet is steel instead of aluminium.

Try both a salon and a cab and see if it bothers you.

The R8 Spyder on the other hand, stiff as concrete...amazing engineering
