High mileage B7 RS4?

Post by petey_h » Wed Jan 30, 2013 5:46 pm

Hi,

I'm new to the site but have been lurking around a little while. I'm ready for the FON. I'm considering an avant as my next car, but my budget will really only stretch to £20k. Should I consider a higher mileage car and keep the difference for running costs? Or should I bite the bullet, and spend more on a lower mileage car. To be honest, I am not too bothered about interior or exterior condition, as long as the mechanicals are OK. My current beemer has 160k on it, but still drives nicely. I'm sure the v8 is well built, but how many miles are they good for? I will not be doing huge miles, but she would be my daily driver (not that I drive every day). The alternatives I am considering are (another) 330 touring, or an impreza, which are both cheaper, and will have lower running costs, but don't have that certain something the RS has. I am doing a test drive on Friday. Looking forward to it :-)

Cheers,

Pete

You'll have to be patient for a good RS4 for 20k or under, but miles shouldn't be a problem if you check the service history like a hawk (paperwork, not just stamps) and are perhaps prepared to compromise on spec and colour etc.

I think a nice one sold on here v recently for a chunk under 20 with 89k miles on.

Another 10-15% on your budget sees you in the sweet spot IMO, so might be worth waiting until you have the funds.

klauster's was up for £16,500 (now sold):

It looked like an absolute minter with full provenance and I'd have bought it without any hesitation if I'd been looking for a B7.

I've owned quite a few high mileage performance cars over the last few years and as long as they've been looked after properly there's no reason why the mileage should be an issue.

Wow, that it was a fantastic buy for someone.

My advice would be to buy a forum members car. I didn't, but wished I had. I ended up with a car that has taken some serious dedication to get back on track (literally).

If nothing else you know that the car has been well looked after, cherished and you have the history of the car to read back on.

My car is a perfect example of what you can get high mileage wise for sensible money from a forum member... even though my car is sold, I would say the car has got better and better with mileage, provided its been well looked after and serviced accordingly I would say don't let the mileage put you off at all.

There are a few cars on the forum right now for sale, which would hands down beat cars available from a dealer....

Good luck with the hunt :)

I was sorely tempted to buy klauster's car even though I'm very happy with my RS6. I can't believe how little it was selling for. I guess it just goes to show how much people are put off by mileage.

Mines going to be up for sale in a month or so as we've suddenly decided to move house and also have another baby on the way.

Avant, Black with black optics. It had new front discs and pads on Monday. 57k miles. 57 plate, FAudiSH, It's had all shocks replaced by Audi so no DRC probs. It had a new engine, clutch and cats last Feb all covered till next Feb with an Audi Warranty. Tracker registered till dec. Comfort seats and mfsw. I'll be looking for £23k.

Pm me for more info if you're interested.

I'm gutted I didn't just go with my instinct and buy it when I first saw the ad. I don't think many examples like that will come up for that sort of money. :(

I don't think he said on here. I'd guess £16k.

Thanks for the feedback folks. A members car would be ideal, but I don't suppose many do finance! If I get my act together, I should be able to get the cash together in a month or two I guess. Anyone want to buy a formula ford? Are there any rs specialists that anyone could recommend? Perhaps I should be patient, but that's never been my strong point. After the test drive (at Slough Audi) tomorrow, the want may become a need! There is one for sale on autotrader for under £15k, from a dealer, just trying to get some more details on it.

Thanks,

Pete

I will bet money that there are stories on that car and that your 15k will be much more like for like.

I saw a few when looking a couple of months ago and the cheap cars were cheap for a reason.

If it's in the south, pm me. I might have been to look already...

You can chew 5k easily on any fast car trying to make them good. Be careful.
