Help/Advice Neeed

Post by ASH555 » Thu Dec 06, 2012 1:07 pm

Hi

Need some advice or your experience

I have a 2007 RS4 B7, super sports suspension + and H & R spacers, original DRC, its covered 25k miles and i am the 3rd owner, it has a full Audi service history

The car has had 2 sets of discs under goodwill/warranty whilst with a previous owner, i bought the car in March 2012, the last set fitted in 2009 whilst the car had 20k miles

The car is suffering the following issues

1. Weeping from fronts shocks (no knocking banging etc)
2. Brake judder

I have had the car in to a local indie garage (Ex Audi Master Tech) who diagnosed the following

1. Shocks only need replacing
2. Near side front hub needs replacing (as will both front discs and pads)
3. Near side rear alloy slightly warped (may not be causing issues)

Here are the options as i see them

Replace both fronts shocks
Replace both front hubs (in case off side becomes an issue?)
Replace rear alloy

I was shown the car on the ramp in gear and could visibly see movement in both near side wheels, and also the slightest on the front off side

Has anybody had experience of the hub fault?

The car has had replacement discs/pads on 2 occasions (and if i do it it will be its 4th set including the factory) i want to get this right

Help

If you want to save on cost slightly you could have the wheel bent back into shape (£50-100) and skim the discs (£50-100 for pair) and use Ferrodo / EBC pads. But replacing hubs would be a given along with the shocks and maybe the DRC control valves

Thanks P_G

Is the need for hub replacement common issue?

what exactly is wrong with the hub?
needing two sets of discs and pads in 20000 miles and now another set at 25000 miles is disturbing, somethings not right somewhere?.
with only 25000 miles hopefully a pair of shocks and a recharge of the system should do it, i would think you unlucky if you needed a central valve.

I don't know whats wrong with the hub, the wheel runs out of true slightly when spun but nothing can be felt whilst driving until braking were a judder comes in, i agree its disturbing and thats why i need some advice.

I think the DRC will only need shocks, there is signs of weeping with one slightly worse than the other.........

could have been a defect in the hub surface from new which has caused all the brake related problems this car has suffered from?.

a slight high spot around one of the threads on the hub surface would cause the disc not to sit flush, it will then wipe on your pads once every rotation in the same place slowly cutting a flat spot on your discs this will then feel like judder/warping.

the original owner takes it back to audi and they fit discs and pads but dont check for run-out and miss the hub problem, all feels fine at first but slowly the judder returns because the disc is not sat flush on the hub. he then takes it back to audi they again diagnose warped discs and change the lot under warranty, again everything feels great until the flat spot reappears.

corrosion on your hub surface can cause similar problems stopping the disc sitting flush, i have also heard over tightening of wheel nuts can pull the threads on the hub also causing the same.

if i were you i might be tempted to get two new hubs and discs and pads, get them fitted using a run-out gauge so you know discs are spinning true and everything is 100%. i would imagine this will cure your cars brake problems.

Audi don't check for run out.

It's not something they have tolerances to check against.

Uneven hub surface is very feasible.

This is more or less what i suspected, just didn't know if it was possible (limited knowledge), doubt i have any come back on Audi now though, cancel christmas big bill on its way

I have gone through at least 5 sets of warped discs since August 2010. They would be fine for a few weeks and then after a month the dreaded wobble would begin to creep in.

After the second time I said to my Audi dealer that there has to be something else causing the judder and then the subsequent warping of the discs but as it has gone back in to Audi now for the 6th time, I cited the hubs may be an issue (thanks for the tip off from Rob at Camberley) and they have replaced those as they said that they were indeed not running true.

A friend of mine also said that they had heard of issues with A3 hubs being warped and also my Audi dealer did say that they had had an A3 in with this fault too when I took the RS4 in.

Fingers crossed this issue is all resolved now and thank heavens for the Audi Warranty I kept taking out!

Ok update on progress

Customer service asked for the car to be taken to a main dealer of my choice for inspection (at no cost)

So off it went to York Audi in communication with Audi customers services, first class service by both, fast replies, regular updates and the final verdict after inspection????

Replace 1 x Strut
Replace both front Hubs
Replace both front Discs

All covered under Audi's goodwill policy :kissmyrings:

Awesome guys thank you so much :biggrin3:

Other manufacturers take note!!!!!

glad you got it sorted mate, respect to audi for looking after you.
any other rs4 with continuous brake problems i would seriously suggest you get your hubs checked.

I have a similar problem, when I bought the car the brakes were clearly warped. We changed the discs and about 5,000 miles later, I'm getting the same warped feeling....

Not happy :(
