RS4 Clutches - Are Clutches Heavy?

Post by jonnysideways » Mon Nov 05, 2012 8:39 pm

Hello all.

Daft question, looking at the possiblility of a sporty Audi. The RS6 has the auot option, but I like the RS4.

Not wanting to bore you all, but my knee isnt 100%, therefore the weight of the clutch has to be taken into consideration, is it heavy as its a 4.2 4x4 car, or are they like a normal Audi 1.8 owing to the build quality. Is the gearbox industrial like a japanesse 4x4 super car, or german masterpieces?

Not driven one, and not one local to me at the moment to go and try.

many thanks, and FON to myself, if thats allowed, gets it out of the way ;0)

Bit heavy but no worse than most performance cars. Where you based maybe someone could give you spin if local?

I wouldn't have said it was heavy. Compared to a pug 106 maybe, but I'd say the pug / fiesta etc are particularly light rather than the RS4 is heavy.

It's no heavier than my Alfa 156 GTA (also a performance car) but I don't think it is heavier than my Nissan Navara either.
The missus has a bad knee and she has never mentioned the RS4 as being heavy.
Now my old Chevy 5.7 V8 in a replica AC Cobra, that had a heavy clutch! When people tried it they thought they were pressing the brake by accident.

I'd agree with mike the clutching my old land rover is heavier than the rs4 I'd don't find the rs4 clutch tiresome or the like in traffic either.

Suppose it all depends what your used too.

if you have a new oe clutch it will be lighter than one that has been on the car a while and worn. The self adjuster makes it heavier, the older the clutch is.

Mines nice and light and sweet to use compered to some of my previous performance cars (although it is a fairly new clutch)

Agreed, the clutch is certainly lighter than my old E46 M3.

perfect, this was what I was after.

My od e46 was a bit heavy, and gearbox had 2nd gear syncro issues, which made for an uncomfortable gear change.

thanks for the info

I'm in chester btw

John

many thanks for the advice. I was able to have a look at one in Oldham the other weekend, and the clutch was acceptable, though after further reading and discussions with friends who had previously had them, I was put off in the end by the low MPG's So I bottled it and bought a B6 2004 S4 Avant. Which is just about seeing 22MPG would leave me to believe the RS4 would have not been suitable for a day to day car, which is why I sold my old porsche in the first place. That and 4 doors 4x4 ;0)
