New M3 v RS4
Are you suggesting that you'd push a car with a tendency to oversteer harder than one with a tendency to understeer in the rain?Exactly, I wouldn't push the RS4 on a twisty road in the rain either, horribly understeery on some bends and very little information from the front end due to artificial steering. At 8/10ths, an RWD car is just as easy to drive.
You're a funny guy.
I think this whole M3 versus RS4 thing is hilarious.

Yes Sir, it all makes very interesting reading!!! Strength in numbers eh??? On this site the M3 boyz will always come off worst, but is the RS4 really better all round in all respects???SR71 wrote:Are you suggesting that you'd push a car with a tendency to oversteer harder than one with a tendency to understeer in the rain?Exactly, I wouldn't push the RS4 on a twisty road in the rain either, horribly understeery on some bends and very little information from the front end due to artificial steering. Where it counts ON real roads with real driveing situations YES, sorry buddy, most people on here (unlike some forums) have owned all the M's and AMG's ect............................... and at the moment prefering the RS4................................. speaks volumes dun it.MugelloR wrote:Yes Sir, it all makes very interesting reading!!! I didn't realise most people on here had owned all the Ms and AMGs and are completely unbiased. I must be one of the unfortunate minority as I've never owned an AMG only one RS and two Ms.audijohn wrote:most people on here (unlike some forums) have owned all the M's and AMG's ect............................... and at the moment prefering the RS4................................. speaks volumes dun it.

Actually my intent was to have a constructive debate on the pros and cons of the long discussed and until now unproven benefits of the B7 RS4 against that of the as yet fully road tested and gauged 2008 M3, being that most accounts have been from the somewhat biased motoring rags who will offer opinions as opposed to quantified and indeed qualified assessment......so actually it don't speak volumes buddy!!!
Interested to know also what is a REAL road, and REAL driving situations?
However, and please do pardon me for repeating myself, I feel positively humbled to be in the presence of, in your words, so many people on here who have owned all of the BMW M series and Merc AMG's etc (not sure how the Merc AMG's came into this but never mind).....my cap has never been so doffed!!!
PS. I had a C32 AMG Merc way back when...I'm notworthy!!!

I do see some element of circular posting.
I like some have owned M & RS (RS6 Ubber Modified, E60 M5 DMS Modified & now a B7 RS4 DMS modified), i have driven the current M3 CSL, CS & regular on raod & track, but have never owned one & i've never owned any AMG although did order then quickly cancel an orger for a CLS 55 a couple of years ago.
I'm also no expert on Dynamics or even an expert driver, however i've taken some high quality tuition over the years & will be doing Scuderia in Genrmany this September, i've also had my 2 cars (RS6 & M5) on many track days, so feel comfortable that i have at least a little qualification to comment.
My head to head is M5 vs RS4 as thats the order of my last 2 cars & i'll state as i've said many times, i prefer the RS4 for the purposes i need a car for & many many people have also taken the transition from E60 M5 to RS4, so this must be for some good reason.
The basis for the preference is general day to day performance which is better (noticabley) in the RS4. The M5 could not even be driven at 50% in wet conditions, unless you wanted to take on the look of a twirling ice-skater. Depositing 500 or even 400BHP onto damp/wet tarmac in a RWD car is 10 times more difficult that in a Quattro car. If you over gas even slightly on a bend or roundabout, you're going to spin. I even managed to spin the M5, going in a straight line in the dry, but fortunately this was on a track.
Perhaps better drivers than me can get 80% out of a high powered RWD car in the wet/damp, but i can't & me/my family are happy to have the security that fun can be had in the RS4 in almost all conditions & i'm still likely to arrive home with me & the car in one piece.
This does not make the RS4 the better car, just better for me as it's my daily driver & i do circa 25K miles per annum.
Using someones Pork annalogy, in the ideal world i'd have a GT3 for track & a Turbo for the road, but if i was only allowed one & it was my daily driver it would have to be the turbo, as i need some room in the back for rare baby seating & that extra level of security that all wheel drive provides.
If i was single & had no need for a daily driver, then perhaps i may lean towards an M & if now, that would no doubt be an M6, as the M Dynamics are better than Audi RS, as is the Chassis & general overall sporty feel, but power as they say is nothing without control & i plus the press appear to agree.

I am not bashing M3's, far from it, I just find now the RS4 to be a better general purpose tool, thats it.
Me too , just to add my 2p worth im sure the new m3 will/is very good but from what iv read they dont seem to have raised the game by very much .I for one wont go back to BMs if they carry on with the interiors and just to add fuel etc i find them a tad boring (previous M5excepted)
In saying that im my experience the dealers are far better.
PS I think the c63 is going to be worth a look
