Also there is one more problem that your current B5 RS4 have/had. The crap brakes! I didn´t see anyone of you being interested in what brakes will they use for the new RS4.

I think it will be the equally crap Guilardo/RS6 brakes
Me id opt for a exclusive fit of some brembos at the factory
Oh yes

So it seems we are already contemplating modifications of the brakes before the car has even been presented.

Is it really too much to hope that the RS4 will set some benchmarks in the ride/handling and braking department - a car that owners will not have to modify significantly to make it perform the right way?

Power to weight is the key issue for performance and although a non-turbo is certanly less appealing to me, normally aspirated engines have benefits such as zero lag.

Guess we just have to wait and see now.

Hey guys, thought this thread was about the RS4 engine only?

Yes it was. Indeed it was. What brakes we may / may not want deserves a whole seperate thread and it is entirely arguable (as I could if you want me to start) that the standard brakes as fitted to the RS4 are up to the job and exactly what Audi wanted them to be.

And Joshie - dont make me laugh with statements like :
normally aspirated engines have benefits such as zero lag.

when we all know that normally aspirated engines are just engines with NO BOOST

My old 355 was as "laggy" as hell unless you kept the engine singing between 4500 - 8000rpm. Unless you always gave it large before changing up then it would be easily embarassed by much lesser machinery

Have I missed something along the way
After the initailly confident assurances that the new engine would be a turbo......is the concensus now leaning towards a non-turbo engine ?
Re the RS6 brakes, my understanding is that they are Brembo and the problem lies not with the calipers but with the tiny pads and the airflow (or lack of it) through the disks.

Not sure I understand where you're coming from entirely Tim. Between shifts in the S4 there was a hesitation - this is simply not present in my M3 nor in the Porsche 996 I tested for a while and frankly lag does detract from the driving experience. Nonetheless, I accept entirely that a turbo engine is infinitely more attractive to many of us (including me) and that the boost (mountains of torque low down the rev range) overcomes the turbo-lag issues which in a 4.2V8 with fast spool-up twin turbos should be minimal anyway.

Regarding your point about staying on topic I agree (shame on me for drifting off topic and metioning brakes when the thread is all about "The New Engine will be... [a twin turbo V8])"

Looking forward to debating all the other potential topics (brakes, suspension, gearshift, weight, bodystyles, colour and optional extras) in due course but I will say that if the new '4 is normally aspirated AND weighs in at 1400Kgs then I'll have my order down straight away. If it's a twin turbo I'll buy two!

I just checked with Audi UK. They tell me that you're blacklisted now so you'll just have to keep the M3!

Two, what do you want with two RS4s?
Might be interesting to buy two if it's a limited edition, but if it isn't?!

I agree, as far as I understand the RS6 brakes have 4 small pads that heat up far too quickly (because they can't dissapate the heat so fast).. most chipped or changed RS6's are going with a large monoblock on the fronts and dual calipers on the rears.. seperate hand brake caliper.

Conti mate - that is what is commonly referred to a figure of speech. Have you never watched the British quiz show Blankety Blank on TV?

I'll barely be able to afford ONE if the weight is 1400Kgs anyway.

Probably wrritten by someone who last drove a F355 - wasn't Tim was it?

Engine development has moved on since then methinks.

It hasnt come on that far. The drive I had last year in a facelift 996 Carrera was a non event as well. At least the 'Rarri went some when you got it past 5,000rpm. Carrera had no balls anywhere in the rev range. But hey! Porsche can address that little problem for you with... guess what? A brace of T U R B O S
