Yea sounds like a bit of OCD there, shame your so far away !

Mine was in the stealers and I asked if I could go in the workshop while it was up in the air to get a good look underneath they were doing the oil change and had the under tray off had a check of the pipes and see one corroded badly. Should have kept my mouth shut so they put the pipes and cooler on the advisories, was hoping I could have pushed that through on my warranty people

right got all my parts here and hoping to get it done tommorow. what have you guys done regarding the cooler empty of oil. have you tried to prime it partly before fitting or just run the car for short time then refill the 2 pints or so its lost. the new hoses have blank caps protecting them so could fill the cooler and pipe work off the car then pop plugs off just before fitting to engine block.

No point - it's thermostatically controlled so will be closed off to begin with.
I would simply refit, top oil up to max and start the car with bumper off.
Keep feeling the cooler pipes and as soon as you feel them start to heat up as the oil enters the system. As soon as you feel the return get hot, switch off and recheck / top up oil.
At 9.something odd litres of oil there will be a fair reserve in the sump.
If you want to be super careful then you could refill when you feel it hit the cooler and the a second time when it hits the return.

I would think trying to refit the cooler full of oil would be a messy pita.

That's interesting as the RS4 is 9.4 (ish) and as far a I am aware the only difference is the fragile front mounted cooler.
So less than a litre lurking around in there.

As such I would say no need to prime as the oil feed is a "T" off the main feed to the cooler.
