"Pinking" is the UK version of "knocking". However we consider knocking not to be pre-ignition (eg carbon buid up) but detonation (too low octane fuel , over tuned engine).
I only know these "definitions" from tuning 2 strokes which used to detonate when the ignition of CR was pushed too hard and this used to sound like a hammer knocking the side of the engine or rattling inside the engine - you had to back off quickly or you would next see what detonation looked like...

I bought a spare for less than 2k saki
in fact I had a spare I bought in scotland for £1900 with service history. Still currently sitting in bits awaiting aftermarket parts and maybe turbos........ One day

Lousy situation. Hope it gets sorted for you, it should if previous history is anything to go by.
I bought mine with a replacement engine and TBH I see it as a bonus.
Car bought at 48,000miles/ Engine 10,250miles.
Apparently the original started using a bit more oil at about 32,000miles and then, a few thousand miles later consumption went ballistic coupled with a persistent misfire. I assume that the bores were badly scored. With this type of engine-block construction that means it's a write-off. Audi popped a new one in free and gratis.

Pinking - lots of small uncontrolled explosions. Bad as causes lots of little pits in the piston, head and cylinder.
Knocking - ignition of fuel at te wrong time. Can kill engine very quickly - piston going up against expanding gases.

I dont think Cranks actually seize - the bearings are soft metal (brass or soft steel) so quickly disintegrate causing lots of play in the crank. That's the classic clunking / knocking (not detonation;)) noise of an engine about to go.ArthurPE wrote:you can definitely see the cap on the crank end (big end) of the rod is missing

Pistons would seize in the cylinder and the Ross would break at the weakest point. I agree this is normally the pins but what I've seen before is when the rod smashes its way through the sump or block it breaks it down even further.
I think the key point is that from that photo it doesn't give a conclusive answer - need to see inside really. Which is why I'm surprised the sump is still in place.

You need to get in contact with a good solicitor (I can pm you details of one) an start waving the sale of goods act in their face.
Warranty or not they are responsible for proving the fault was your and not present at the time of purchase.
Given that they serviced it only 3000 miles ago its not likely to be claimed it was out of oil (good luck them proving that it was out of oil!)
You need to start pushing as this really isn't your problem. Speak to the dealer principle and then audi customer care.
They should at least guarantee the engine removal costs be covered.

Audi were never going to say "yes we'll fit a free engine Sir" when you dropped the car in - they will always cover their arse. They will want to check the car has not been modified first etc. I'd let them strip the car as they are indeed doing - albeit slowly by the sounds of it. They have not asked for any payments up front, let them see what they find and go from there! If you bought the car from Audi with a years warranty you are in the best position right now

Not saying it should be instant free engine but things should be moving a lot faster and this scare tactic of 600 quid should never have happened.

If they end up with reason to refuse the claim, and didn't note this beforehand, they would have no chance of recovering the cost of removal.
If it's from an Audi garage I can't imagine them not covering a failure like this.
I'd push them a bit quicker and/or get a loan car, but ultimately the OP will need to see what they come back with.

The garage I bought the car from have agreed to pay for the removal of the engine should my warranty not cover it, took all of yesterday to get it agreed but got there in the end.
Still no courtesy car tho. They're saying they don't have any available till next week?! Been without my car for 8 days now!

Hi mate I suggest u ask Audi uk to provide you with a car as they can authorise one for you from another dealership an if not they also have a fleet of cars which they use for Audi breakdown who supple cars to people on roadside they will help you.
