**UPDATE**

car is back in with Audi today. They just called and the car will be staying with them, they are going to take the manifold off and do something or other

Could this be linked to the carbon build up thread?!?!?

Hey guys,
Thought I'd share my first 24 hour RS4 ownership experience with you!

Took delivery of the car from Audi Wakefield yesterday lunchtime.
Started my journey back up north to Aberdeen and about an hour in, I noticed the EPC light on the dash. Because the car was new to me and I just happened to hit the snow coming over the Pennines, I assumed this was one of the numerous acronym titled driver aids so ignored it.
By the time I was north of Carlisle, the EML was also on so I stopped off at the next service station for some fuel and have a squint over the owner’s manual.
Phoned Wakefield Audi to advise of the problem and after getting the go ahead from the service manager, was told I’d be able to continue on my way based on the fact the car was still running well but was advised to get it into Audi Aberdeen the next day.
TBH - the thought of having to U-turn and take it back wasn't all that appealing given that I was a good 3 hours away from them and still had another 4 hours before I got home.

Into Aberdeen Audi this morning explaining what had happened but they can't book the car in until March 9th although the service advisor did ask why Wakefield didn’t suggest phoning RAC roadside when I reported it which got me thinking…….

So when I got home I gave RAC a call. The Tech plugged in his box of tricks and here’s his diagnosis with codes if it means anything to anyone.

He tried to clear the fault a few times but it kept coming back. EPC was continuously on but the EML would clear for a while and eventually return.

He reckons he could probably take the intake flap / manifold to bits for me and try to clean it up but I’d rather Audi do it properly seeing as I’ve owned it less than a day and already there’s a fault code!

My car is at the Dealers, so I asked them about these two warnings. Here is what they said to me:

All these systems are closely monitored which is why we have EML/EPC indication lamps. If it turns on it just means that some part of the emission control system has, or has been, out of tolerance Unfortunately people seem to think that if this lamp illuminates it’s a warning that the whole world will implode at any second!!

However, they have also made sure that the potentiometers that monitor the intake flaps and motors are working correctly and can be basic set and move freely, this is a good indication that everything is working as it should.

I am quoting what they said verbatim - hope all this makes sense to the technically gifted :)

yes, my car drives 100% fine, EPC light on or not, and at no point has it changed in its characteristics

however, if the light is CONSTANTLY coming on and off, this must point to the fact that something is not working correctly.

Easy for them to casually laugh it off however they're not the ones who have just spent £30k+ on a motor.

To be honest, when mine came on I wasn't overly concerned as the car was running fine, no funny noises, not overheating or anything. I guess if there was something majorly wrong the car would have either shut down on me or gone into some sort of safe mode and restricted how much revs the engine was getting.

Would still be nice to have a dash without two yellow warning lamps permanently lit up though.

when EPC or EML is on, you are restricted to 7k RPM

mine is being taken apart and will not be ready until next Tues

I would say the cause is a failing mass air sensor. It can be trigger any of those lights to come on and then go out again.

Update on my EPC / EML issue.
Both lights went out about 5 days ago but I still kept the appointment for it to go in this morning to get checked out.
Had it in a bit after 9 and was advised I probably wouldn't get it back until COB at 630.

Was just about to walk out the door armed with bus routes / numbers to get up there when the tech called.
The fault is stored and they've been through all their checks and procedures but cannot seem to positively identify whats wrong.
He's asked to keep the car overnight so they can try a cold start tomorrow morning.

He reckons it may be the inlet manifold that requires replacing as all the symptoms point to this but he needs to be absolutely sure before he commits and orders parts.

Updates to follow!

Yeah I'll be sure to sort out a courtesy car from them.
I didn't bother with one today as I thought it would only be in for a matter of hours, on the plus side the sun was out so that gave me an excuse to get the bike out for a blast, 1st time since November 09 and I'd forgotten how ridiculously quick she is.
