Interestingly the jump cables attach at the front under the access panel near ecu2 and the battery is all the way in the boot. I'd be tempted to hook up the old or new battery that wasn't working to the jump lead points and try the car. My money is on a dodgy earth or live point in the rear and this is affecting the start.
Once started the car will run fine on the alternator power feed.
good point. it's a long way for the power to travel front to back

Hi! Sorry to dig this old topic out...

I'm having the same issue for almost a year now with my B7.

Did you ever find the root cause and solve this annoying issue ?

That's an issue a few us over here are having.

Worse in the cold
Takes progressively longer over time
Starts with just a few seconds of nothing... eventually you're sat there for thirty minutes in the morning
Only on first start after the car has sat overnight or for a day... Subsequent starts within a few hours are fine

It's the starter. Pain in the ass job to replace it and people often hope it's a half dozen other things in order to not have to replace it.

questions
does the cruise control work
d the revs lag a bit high when the clutch is depressed before dropping

if so, clutch switch

Thanks for the answers!

Well, I have that rev thing when pushing the clutch pedal and rolling to the traffic light ...
So the engine revs a little up and down, yes.
(But I already changed the clutch switch about 2 years ago...?)

Cruise control is still working perfect.

I hear the relais making a click noise after pushing the clutch pedal. So could it still be the clutch switch then ?

I always have the following error (sorry it is in German):

I wonder about the voltage. (I also have a new battery etc.). And my xenon is flickering. Not sure if there is a dependency between the 2 issues somehow?
I really, really would like to avoid replacing the starter motor. exactly :nodder:

I think I am going to replace the starter button, clutch pedal switch, the 2 starter relais first as this is something I can do on my own.

Hi - I'm getting the same problem - see fault code below. Also something with cooling fan (don't know if it could be linked in any way). I have a distinct feeling that it's moisture-related as it usually seems to happen in damp weather. When I get the problem I spray some WD40 around under the bonnet and (so far) it has started after that.

Where are the relays located?

Had a similar intermittent problem which threw all sorts of fault codes but not the starter relay one. Turned out (so far so good) to be relay number 614 which is located somewhere below the driver's side ecu.

It's listed as fuel pump relay but 614 is not for the fuel pump. It is a main power relay which if I remember rightly from the 14 fault codes I had includes power to sensors for secondary air injection, engine mounts, lambdas, fuel pressure regulators and various others. One of the other codes I had was battery voltage too low (10.4v) although the battery was checked and found to be fine during the diagnostics. This relay is under the driver's side ecu as I watched them replace it through the window in the workshop. Took about 20 mins and included removing the scuttle panel and also the trim down the side of the windscreen and wipers.

I got my starting problem sorted out eventually. Wasted my time and money changing the starter relays as stated to do by Audi.

Just a new starter motor required which cost £250 from the stealers themselves. You'll get about £35 back for returning old one.

New starter. Very common problem, more prevalent in the colder climate countries.

Starts with a few second delay before it starts. Then a few minutes. Then you're sitting there for twenty thirty minutes to start the car.

New starter is about $250 here, and labour to install about the same.
