For God's sake don't pay for the replacement of the manifold just for the sake of those flaps.

Take the car to MRC and see what they suggest.

My guess is they'll either replace your flaps for you, or for £2K, clean your manifold, de-flap it and re-install it or for a little bit more, remap it as well so that you never have to worry about the blighters again!

De-flapping it will stop the deliberate air turbulence which is what makes the weak air:fuel ratio at low throttle openings work, so won't it create flat spots?

It'll cost me 2k in petrol to get there and back, haha

It would need remapping to sort that out IIRC from what caldy had done to his when he devaned his manifold?

caldy is your man in the know about such things.

Also forgot to mention that when the car was in they were going to conduct the battery well recall, but apparently the split was so big that the cover plate they rivet on was to small for the split so they had to take pictures of it and send to Audi UK for advise, it may have to go to a body shop and get welded apparently and funny enough, the car sailed through its MOT today at the local garage

The flaps are there to create tumble which assists in stratified/lean-burn mode I agree.

http://sankaranv.blogspot.com/2009/01/f ... ction.html

I don't think it will create flat spots, because the flaps open when demand is high, merely prevent optimal combustion at low loads.

Robs car was deflapped and we measured a 1mpg difference in economy between our cars on a 20 min cruise on the motorway side by side. Bear in mind Rob's car had been ported by then and was running decatted with a Miltek system.

SilverRS4 deflapped his car and saw a small rise in engine temps I believe so re-installed them. I don't think Rob observed the same effect?

You won't need a remap just because you remove the flaps although maybe you'd derive some benefit from tweaking the part-throttle maps, but cognizant of the above, is it worth it?

In Arthur-speak, if deposits make no odds to flow, manifold flaps certainly won't will they?

There is a cost benefit equation here in that if you are going to spend £2000 on a new manifold on a car out of warranty and you're a petrolhead, surely you might as well get some extra performance and reliability out of your hard earned cash at the same time?

Its the perfect excuse....and the bonus is a 600 mile drive thrown into the mix.

The Missus could hardly object.

I've just had exactly the same symptoms this week on my car whilst away. EPC light has been on and off for a few weeks so I suspect the sensor fault. Emissions light came on this week and has stayed on so I will be interested to see what the (same) dealer says when I take it in. Interesting also that emissions light doesn't impose the 7,000 limit the same as the EPC light. I haven't found a drop in performance.
