Looks like I might have to change my vote

Complained about the car knocking on rebound over sleeping policemen when the car was in at the dealers last week for its first service. They found nothing wrong with it, however, when it was on the ramps recently for new tyres, the tyre fitter pointed out the leaking front shock absorber :x

Not exactly impressed with the dealer for not spotting it, especially when I told them about the heavy knocking noise from the front.

I kinda liked the smiley! Good point though. Certainly doesn't need to read like a solicitor's letter - was thinking more along the lines of him looking at it and advising rather than actually writing it. I'm wondering if the best strategy for this is for everybody involved to send their letters to the same person, perhaps right to the top. I understand that Jeremy Hicks has moved on - anyone care to confirm? Also, it needs to be flexible enough for it to serve as a united front at the start but also allow us to pursue individual courses of action as we privately see fit, so the initial friendly but firm approach is good!

Edit: Not sure if it's wise to have final letter posted up here, even if it is friendly. You can bet your bottom dollar that somebody somewhere at Audi will be reading this, or some market research agency working *for* Audi will be. Just you wait for the next "As a valued Audi customer we would like to invite you to... 50 quid incentive... yada yada" letter :-)

Might be better to PM your email addresses to one person. However, I understand privacy concerns so up to you guys. Would make things run a bit more smoothly and can post general updates here?

Jeremy Hicks is still there, had an email from him (or more likely a PA  ) within 1 day of me emailing him. I was surprised to get such a quick response, but it goes to show that there is someone there on the ball.
Paul Adcock is "head of Technical matters" (replaced Tom Peterkin I believe?).

Not to sound pessemistic regarding the letter as it is a good idea, however to give you example when I had my B6 S4 a number of B6 S4 owners did a similar thing regarding the poor design of the ducting for the auxilliary radiators which led to premature corroding which a number of B6 S4 owners had experienced and for some had replaced under warranty if still within the warranty period.

IIRC the response from Audi UK was that it was not deemed a significant enough issue to warrant a recall on the B6 S4 and that they would continue to replace corroded aux. radiators individually when cases presented themselvs but would not issue a mandate to replace both on a car when only one was corroded and those out of warranty would have to seek a goodwill gesture with their dealer / Audi UK if they chose to pursue that line of action.

It may well be you get a similar response regarding RS4 shocks, however all said shy bairns don't get. At least nearly all RS4's are still in warranty!

Oh no, not you too Lancia. I was feeling lucky there for us OZ owners til now! so far no knocking noise or problem with handling that I can tell. It's nearly 15000kms and about due for first service in a few weeks. I'll definitely get them to check it out thoroughly. Please let us know what your dealer says. Regards.

I think I may need to change my vote too. Got a slight knock over a ridge in the road on the way home last night, so thought I'd check. Lo and behold, what looks like oily residue on the nsf damper :( Need to get the car booked in to get it verified. I'll let you know.

Did you need to take the wheel off to check, or is it visible without?

Not cross-checked but everybody please remember to register your 'yes' or 'no' on the 'shock absorber poll contributors please read' thread.

I just put the steering on full lock and shone a torch up behind the wheel. I could see oily residue around the gaitor and on the body of the strut.

Quick update.

All four shocks replaced at Chelmsford Audi thsi week. Despite a couple of petty issues on the organisation front (having to wait half hour for courtesy car to be cleaned and them not having the tools for the job or knowing when they would arrive!) it all seems to have worked out OK. They actually got it sorted in two days (along with a couple of other minor repairs) and I've given it a try over about thirty miles of mixed roads - seems fine so far.

I took the opportunity to chat with Head of Service about new shocks and whether they are updated/different to the originals. He said he had no way of knowing. Seems they are the same part number but he suggested that if they produced a different version and ditched the whole of the faulty batch they would stick with teh same part number anyway. FWIW he also seemed pretty confident the problem wouldn't recur - we'll see!

had one shock replaced last week and they were over confident it would be ok and guess what its going back for the same thing again so i would say new batches are still the same as old
