guys... problem solved
today I waited till oil temp was 104 then waited 3/4 minutes, then the level was perfectly between max and min, in the metal bit....

I guess my first measurement was correct and the car was just slightly over MIN, and after adding 0.5 lt I am now perfect. the 2nd measurement - right after adding the oil - for some reason was completely wrong: my only explanation is that I might have not run the car enough to let the new oil settle in hence it looked like I was over MAX

anyway....all good thanks all

my yellow oil dis light came on today, it is funny as I know from meeting pisquano that we purchased our cars around the same and have done similar mileage since purchase and similar miles total on the ODO !

In my experience oil usage increases the longer ago a service was done.

My RS4 uses almost no oil in the first 6 months after a service and then it starts to use oil until by the time a year is approaching it's using 1 litre per 2000 miles.

Actually I've done much less, more like 700 miles but I don't know how many miles the car was driven from the last service (October) till February. Will check the service book
I don't really know when was the last time the previous owner had topped it up

when you start it up it should tell you how many miles to next service, and aren't your intervals 10k miles
that should tell you how many you've done since reset

My mistake, I thought you said you bought at similar miles to me, and still had similar miles to me.
