I would definately agree with Amanda...I'm a wee bit biased tho' as the wife has one - it's a real hoot to drive, plenty of kit etc. Does what it says on the tin with ease.
You can still get 26 - 27mpg no probs in fairly spirited driving.

The ST is a real great car for the money - Xenons etc etc. You can get a good one for less than £10K...wasn't it one of the 'mags' best value used car last year?

PS I know of a good ST3 in Orange if you are interested...

Our second car is a Leon Cupra R.
4 doors, and actually more room inside then the Audi lol
It's remapped, everything else standard.
Pleasure to drive, handling, ride, communication, brakes are all spot on.
Putting out somewhere in excess of 320bhp but returns 32mpg every week.
Paid under 25k new with touch screen sat nav, stitched leather, BT, ipod, usb, xenons and auto everything. Equivalent price Golf R was £38K.
Course it's only a Seat....

Right, I've narrowed it down and will submit the list to the wife for approval - that's how the marriage is - don't pretend you guys are any different!

In my order of preference:

Seat Exeo 170 TDI (Tech pack) - thx aka_dk
Focus RS - thx amanda1
BMW 335d thx shouldvebeengerman & parlee-king (but it's an auto box!)
Focus ST3 - thx mac4rs (this is my cheap sub 10k option)
Alpina D3 bi-turbo - thx andre3000
Octavia VRs - thx steve_c
Leon Cupra R - thx mark758 - this would go well next to the wife's, little Seat family!
Nissan 370Z - thx andymc

That's my list - i can't think of anything that is missing, don't fancy a Golf R32, can't afford a DB9, GT-R, ISF so this is it.....

I need something to tie me over until I can reach to a Maserati Granturismo mmmmmmmmmmm! (the 4.7 obviously...)

She took the RS4 for a drive last night to her friends house, the husband came out and commented and she said she had a great drive but then noticed the 17.8 mpg that she was getting - I've never got it as low as that, ever! She reckons we need a diesel - I'm like - if you drive like that we do, dammmmmmmmn!

BOOM, job done!

The future wife has a Golf, shes doesnt want to drive the RS4 as shes scared something will happen to it.

We were looking at the 1.9 TDI, but the cost difference between that and the 1.4 petrol would mean that we would need to do crazy miles to even out the initial cost.

My future wife loves the RS4, but is a bit scared of driving it, we decided to get her a new Golf 1.4 TFSI and have that as the sensible car, which I end up with more than she does ...

Guys, she has a Seat leon Cupra R which she owns, she just doesn't like the RS4 that much - when I look at the Seat Exeo ST (which, as we all know is the B7 A4 Avant with a remodelled nose) the things that annoy me - lack of space in the back - small boot space etc - are still there, it's not the cheapest puppy either, maybe I need a Mondeo estate

You are wrong there Tim

SEAT have redesigned the rear bench on the latest Exeo's for more rear leg room

This came about when the SEAT CEO has to travel for a few thousand miles in the back of one during the ash cloud fiasco

Look out for ones with LED rear lights, these will have the uprated rear bench

I don't understand this thread at all!

so your wife has / owns a cupra R?

what's the real reason for her wanting to sell YOUR car? surely its not just because she doesn't "like" it.

Do YOU actually want sell your car?

if you guys haven't got a 2nd car, then get her one that she likes. why would you want to sell the RS4 if you are happy with it. none of those cars will adequately replace it. To replace it you would need to spend big money, my choices would be either Nissan GT-R, porsche 997 turbo or 997 GT3. Then you would be getting a less practical but better car. the ones you have listed you will only be disappointed with as far as I can see.

if you need something cheaper to run but fun, what about a megane 250 cup or clio 200 cup, they are highly rated by EVO.

psg001 - thank you for your courteous and succint reply. Buddy - I've got a 20 mpg car on the drive and my wife wants better fuel, she doesn't like the handling and just hasn't warmed to 'Audi' - to be honest I'm inclined to agree with her (apart from the handling and Audi bit) - I'm willing to sacrifice the V8 for a hot hatch, failing that move completely away from performance for a while and suck a diesel lifestyle for a bit. I've never had a diesel and now with the modern common-rail engines etc the performance can be pretty good but still return some awesome mpg. Truth is I very much enjoy fast cars, this is something we all have in common, but if I am one day going to roll around town in a R8, Maserati, Gallardo or 458 Italia then maybe I have to make the savings now. My wife wants to move house and this all costs money - sometimes downsizing is the right thing to do. The RS4 is the only car I want right now but we all gotta live - and you're absolutely right - to step up to something even coming close to this much awesomeness is going to be a 997 or GT-R both of which are out of my league. The question I raised was:

'what else is out there that you would consider - nothing really appeals to me apart from the RS4, what am i missing that should be on this list?'

Now the forum guys have thrown a few ideas about I actually can see my wife's point of view (kinda if I look through warped spectacles) and look forward to a change - we all need to move on. I have an awesome car - it's had 3 owners (I am that 3rd) and someone out there will appreciate it a lot more than I do at the moment. I run to work everyday, so it sits at home during the week and sometimes at the weekend, it is truly a weekend car but when I drive North Wales to Portsmouth to see my dad - dammmmmn, that fuel costs BIG money!

So, I see your concerns psg001, but my wife doesn't enjoy the Audi and I'm warming to the idea that making a change makes for a better home life. If I change to something cheaper/slower now then maybe i'll be able to meet everybody on the 458 Italia forum in a few years time (trying to work out how to stop our cars catching fire). We'll be old by then and be all sat round talking about the old days when we all drove RS4's and questioning why no one has since made a car that combines such practicality, form, poise, and such a spirited drive; until then I will get a 4x4 Fiat Panda and stick a photo of a GranTurismo MC Stradale on the dash with a note saying - 'Buy me in 2015'.
