Dropped it into the Audi centre and they couldn't find anything wrong, latest software on, no error codes etc. They've logged a call with Audi and have just changed all the spark plugs!!!!! Its only done 3000miles. Basically they have no clue whats wrong, but I picked it up this morning and so far so good. They were basically saying if this doesn't fix it, they will replaces the coils.

Fingers crossed.

Bad news guys - I think its back!!! Am going to check tomorrow morning to be sure, but it looks like it is doing it again.

perfect timing though, as Audi Customer Care called me last night and asked how satisfied I was with the service from the local dealer....... Said it was great but they can't fix the car!!!!

If it is back I'll call them tomorrow and let you all know how it goes....

cheers

Dave

I also had cold start problems with my RS4, and the updated ecu firmware made no difference. I found leaving the car on tick over for a couple of minutes fixed the problem, but it went against what Audi's manual said, on how to warm the engine up....

Update

Post by s3marc » Fri Nov 30, 2007 1:37 pm

2 weeks in.... the car is still at the garage. Changed various parts, obvious big lead times on some of the parts - cannot seem to get a straight answer on what exactly is being changed , but I have asked for a full report.

Audi UK have been asked to upgrade my A3 loan car to something more in keeping with the RS as latest estimates are at least another week in the garage - new solenoid been fitted (any ideas?) , then they need to attempt cold starts and report back to Audi UK.... And upgrade firmware - would have thought they would have done that first

I've just taken to allowing mine to idle for 5 or so mins before driving off first thing in the morning, mostly because my commute is short enough that if I set off from first turnover the engine won't have reached normal operating temperature before I get to the office. But I have found it eliminates the problem.

Whetstone Audi

Leaving it to idle was what was suggested by Dealer, although that is not really a great solution - it is after all a £50k plus car - never had another car that has to be warmed before using except maybe my Jenson Healey - but that was a car from the 70's - them were the days!!!

My July 07 Avant has same cold start problem (currently 14k miles), a bit lumpy for about 1 minute or so. At 6am when I leave for work theres plenty of greyish fumes aswell as condensation from the exhausts. As soon as the car warms thro' lumpyness goes. Might check the oil again to see if its low - topped up 2k miles ago.

ATM not too concerned about geting it fixed as there doesnt seem to be a definitive solution out here yet. And as much as I like audi dealerships  I can think of better ways to spend time right now  (like xmas shopping  )

I liked the prior comment from Audi about "excessive oil inlet valves" but no "cause for conern/within tolerences". Makes you wonder how they'd classify smthg really stuffed?

Update on my cars again. It went back into the dealer last Wednesday and still no luck. They want it back this week for more tests, seems that Audi uk don't really know what is wrong. I think they changed the leads over this week!?!?!? One thing I have noticed is that when you start the car there is a very strong smell of petrol. I took the car over to France last weekend and the run seemed to do it good for a few days ( no more hesitation ). With the strong smell of petrol I wonder if the two are realted, over fuelling etc....

Mine had the same symptoms you describe - including the heavy smell of petrol at startup. i took it to my local stealer who advised me they could find nothing wrong (they had it for one day and night). However, the car drives like a different animal now. no petrol smell, no lumpiness and even better mpg. (Was averaging just over 20 - managed to hit 28.9 on the M25 on Friday back from Watord!!!!!).

PM me if you want the dealer details - not my local stealer, and found them to be well versed on the RS4.
Everyone is unique, just like you and me.

had my car in for the update today, went to collect it though and the head tech said he,d checked and all updates had been done anyway :?
so looks like i,ll still be getting the lumpy cold start, on the upside had the black grill fitted on my black saloon and it looks the business 8) 8)

cost me £124 for the grill, and £230 for it fitting
