I stow behind talking with the Carl some days and it said that the QUATTRO this making test with some types of engines for the new RS4, since V6 3,0 of aluminum bi-turbo , V8 , V8 bi-turbo amongst others.
But with certainty it will be the V8 ENGINE with or without turbos because the V8 engine is the engine that more PLEASES To the AMERICAN MARKET that is the main target of the Audi!!!!!
Very probably RS4 with automatic (tiptronic) gear box will exist also!
beyond the RS4 with gear box mechanics

Ken if we get 420hp and 1400kgs then all other things being equal we see a 25% improvement in power : weight ratio when talking standard cars.

RS4 current @1650kgs is 4.34 kg /hp
RS4 projected is 3.33 kg / hp

Chipped current RS4 @460hp (yours actually then ) is 3.58 kg / hp

All in all an improvement worth holding on for, but I cannot for the life of me see how Audi will get the weight to 1400kgs using standard chassis when you think a standard S4V8 weighs some 1680kg.

How will Audi make 1400kg?

kevlar seats, carbon bonnet, lightweight panels, no air-con, no spare, lightweight alloys, ceramic discs and don't forget the titanium tool-kit

Any other suggestions, as I doubt that's enough to make 1400kgs ?

oh, and don't forget the DSG gearbox option too.

Just how is the weight going to be under 1400 kilos? The 2wd version is only just under at 1395.
The lightest quattro is currently the 1.8T at 1475. Forged aluminium drive shafts/prop shaft ( or carbon fibre?) carbon brakes lightweight forged wheels lots of aluminium body panels/ bumper bars etc is the only possible way..............unless there is a bodyshell revision on the way and much more is aluminium, like the A8

Chris, the S3 unladen weight is 1420 kgs, I have the 225 S3 brochure in front of me right now. New A3 3.2 with DSG is 1629 kgs!!!!
My S3 totals 1485 kg with sunroof etc, so cannot see that there is any way the new RS4 will be lighter than the old S3 AND have 420 bhp!!!

dream on

Well I wouldn't take that bet John.

Remember what the M3CSL had to do to get the weight down to 1350 kgs - carbon fibre roof and boot, cardboard boot liner, thin glass, synthgetic resin bulkhead etc etc.

Well I guess Audi could do anything BMW can do if they put their mind to it but I would be (pleasantly) surprised if 1400 Kgs is achieved.

But the prospect of the RS4 has my mouth watering already

And Joshie IIRC it sacrificiced a number of toys in the cabin department which displeased some current M3 owners.

Its a fine balance, but if Audi want to sell another 6,000 RS4's they cant do this. They could however make two variants as has been suggested before, and the relatively hand built nature of things at Quattro would make this fairly simple. A Sport and Comfort version like Porsche occasionally do of some models, but then a truly hardcore, stripped out avant can only have a very limited market, and stripped out it would really have to be to get to 1400kgs.

The stripped out racing "RS4" that was at the drivers challenge in 2002 still weighed in at 1300kgs me thinks, and that was with everything stripped out and flimsy plexiglass windows.

If Audi really serious about saving weight then the body panels are the place to start. Remember that on RS4 these were virtually all unique for that model and shared very little commonality with the then A4. Unlike the RS6 this should be done again, then we can all start to go wobbly about the prospect

They already have the technology for lightweight wings etc - the Toerag has plastic front wings etc

Personally being one of the "old gits" on the site I would like to see a few creature comforts in the car even if only to appease the wife
