Hi guys,

BAD NEWS. The garage recons there's something wrong in the diff. Not a great way to kick off RS4 ownership. I'll keep you all posted as it unfolds. :(

P.S I've since realised that the noise gets a fair bit louder if going downhill : LISTEN here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4ywT4KisHM

Hi butters. Sadly yes. From initial road test the technician reckons diff but won't have a better idea until up of a ramp.

Yes it does sound like a diff noise from my experience but wouldn't rule out a driveshaft CV joint propshaft/ bearing of some sort, not familiar with these cars, but like your mechanic says once he's got it on a ramp should have a much better idea, be interesting to know the outcome, keep us updated, cheers!

Hi Jimbob,

Bearing in mind its only in first gear - not a trace in any other gear or in neutral which I thought ruled out Cv joint / prop etc.

I'll keep you all posted, I'd like to think this will help another member at some point...

Yes will definitely help out some other members at some point when issue is resolved, I have searched the site on other posts on your behalf but can't find any finite conclusions, but in my experience as a black cab mechanic you need to get hands on, let your mechanic do his job I'm just as eager to as you hear the resolution. The only reason I say CV joint my missus has a 4 motion golf, had a simular sound, my reasoning is car is under heavy load pulling away in first, once everything starts moving less pressure on bearings CV joints etc, just my theory!?

Hi Bill - yes its a sort of pulsing whine sound. As I described previously a it like a wheel bearing.
OK. I'm out in mine tomorrow morning. I'll see if it makes the same noise. :)
Not much help to you, unfortunately, but mine definitely doesn't make this noise. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
