It does have a 'wet b*stard' roof though, so all pee will be washed away and out through floor rot they're prone too.

Lovely cars, they attract lots of attention and positivity when being driven out. All good fun.

This is probably also the case the turbo variants.
Different engines!

I love the 996 turbo, I've a c4s. I just can't get rid of! Had her nearly 8 years, very little costs really on average. Compared to the rs6 she's dirt cheap!

The prices are going up, but I think the 996 turbo (s) are a better investment.

I keep thinking about switching to a 997 gen2 turbo. But too skint at the moment.

Rpm technics are great. They had a lovely black 996 turbo for sale, not sure if it still there.

I was pretty set on a 997.2 Turbo as well, but then I drove a 991 NA for 10 days and after that a 997 does feel very dated inside and in terms of front axle. And they sound so good.

I do prefer the big Turbo rear with the vents in the side but the missus wants the newer one and explaining depreciation to someone who throws vast amounts of money at bags and shoes is futile.

GTS is sweet spot for NA, though not sure they can still be ordered. 991.2 almost here. That's next on my shopping list.

Agreed 991 makes 997 feel dated, that said not much is going to stay on the tail of Turbo S.

Wait and see about 991.1 though with the NA units being dumped for smaller turbocharged ones :(

No doubt they'll be both quicker and more fuel efficient but almost certainly the traditional sound is going out the window.

I wanted to have a look at this one for 39.5K (!) GBP at current exchange rate http://auto.ru/cars/used/sale/1018740303-6d009e/

Brembo kit all round, Techart exhaust w/cats, proper remap on it too. Missus hates the colour and "frog" look :bash:

My cousin has a 996 Turbo and has had no issues whatsoever.

Go for the X50 if you can find one. My mate Dirk in Berlin has one. Very nice.
I once had a 996 C2, I kid you not, a big disappointment to me. But the turbo is a different animal.
Go for it.

Really been thinking about the 996 turbo X50 myself. The plan was to sell either the RS4 or the evo and put the rest to the 911. Lucky to get a decent X50 for under 40k now with reasonable mileage. Can only see them going up in value now like every other 911 turbo.

Going by values and how I would own one, I can't see myself loosing money, if I buy the right one.

Thanks guys.
Hi I had a 996 C4S which is essentially the turbo but without the turbo.

They are great cars except big issues being RMS and IMS (Intermediate Shaft), as mentioned on other responses this is essential to the longevity of the engine. Porsche Rev'd this part some 23+ times and still couldn't get it right it's just one if those things. If it's leaking oil there walk away IMO, tiny drips bo problem and then get it done with a ceramic IMS when the clutch needs doing as the clutch only has a life of approx 30-40k.

Rads are located on the front so another issue as they get coated in leaves and stuff so decay and leak.

Brakes are weak points and easily fade unless it's got ceramics fitted spirited driving is likely to show this up quickly.

The turbo is a great car and yes the 996 wide bodies are starting to appreciate so a sound investment you just need to ensure like any other performance car you select carefully, right spec, colour choice, service history etc.

Oh and by the way only buy one with a PSE (Porsche sports exhaust) valve do fail like RS4 so just make sure if it isn't working you have them set to open. It's £6k+ for a new one so that sound shouldn't worry you!

Avoid the tiptronic it's slow and same as fitted to merc, manual all the way on this car.

Good luck

Specifically the second last posting on the first page.
as has been said that is the NA engines though, the turbo does not suffer the IMS bearing failure - or the bore issues...
Sorry but it does, it's the same engine as the rest of the range.

The RMS and IMS are inherently linked due to the mounting of the engine and box and the movement between the two.

It's a weakness that's been there since day 1.

What cars are susceptible to an IMS failure?

All model year 1997-2008 Boxster, Cayman, and 911 models can suffer from IMS failures, with exception of "Turbo, GT2, or GT3" models.

The Turbo, GT2, or GT3 models use the Mezger engine but like any engine, there will always be a rare problem occurring like this link .....

It was one of the main reasons I sold my 996 Carrera and bought a turbo with this virtually bullet proof engine. So my advice would be "buy a turbo". It will not disappoint.
