Personally I've never been a huge fan of VW since the big bumper GTI - too much of a sleeper. I almost went for a white scirocco r which are my fave VW - 3door though and just can't do it.
However the Golf R does look smart.
Quick, economical, 4 door, nice cabin

I just can't believe how much they are to buy outright. Almost 40k with good spec.

There is no doubt they will be a cracking thing to drive.
Why didn't top gear test an 'r' against the M135i - was it down to price which was same reason as the non tested A45 AMG (which is my fave hatch)

That's another example of the inflated pricing which seems to be becoming endemic in the whole of the VAG Group.

Load of bollux.

They start at £29,xxx before dealer discount.

The standard spec is very good compared to an Audi and includes Adaptive Cruise Control as standard for example.

You can spec any car to inflated prices.

Fair point.
10 on trader... 5 around 35k and 5 from 37 - 40.
29 isn't bad money I guess and makes one more appealing than A45 in basic spec.
10k isn't small change after all!

Not seen one on the road so exclusivity is also a nice plus point!
Depreciation will be decent as well I bet.

SEAT is very ugly in comparison, but I bet there is not a whole load of difference in build quality, it's a better like for like than the b7. A more up to date comparison in which the seat holds it's own, don't get me wrong I would never have it over the golf

There will be a difference in build quality.
Whilst the chassis underpinnings are the same, they are built in different factories with different finishing materials in order to get the car within the desired price...the SEAT is cheaper, will sell in less numbers and SEAT lose money, and so they will be penny pinching vs. Wolfsburg who will churn out millions of Golfs

You're entitled to your opinion, but I strongly disagree with it.

Whenever I visit ANY VAG group website and configure the spec of a model to what I would buy its been VERY noticeable over the past 5 years that VAG Group prices have gone up by at least 5% per annum, i.e. at least twice the rate of inflation.

The facts speak for themselves, VAG cars with an identical spec are significantly more expensive in real terms than they were when I bought my RS4 and we bought my wife's Fabia (we also looked at the Polo and the Ibiza). Take the RS4 as an example - in 2006 I paid £53k but to get a B8 RS4 WITH AN EQUIVALENT SPEC would now cost not far short of £80k, if the prices had gone up with inflation that would have been closer to £63k.

The difference is even greater with my wife's Fabia, we paid £7k in 2005 but to get the same spec now is close to £14k.

I stand by what I said VAG prices are a rip-off.

You don't have to agree, but you certainly don't have to use insults like bollux if you don't agree.

In standard spec the golf r is very good value but as soon as u start adding the extras it starts to become very expensive. Back in 2006 the rs4 was a bargain. Still a cracking car today
Imo the r should come with leather as standard :biggrin3:

Dave I wasn't insulting you.

Can you spec your £80k B8 and post the config code?

To replace the Mrs S3 for me.
What about the S1 Sportback for the Mrs ?? I'm not sure of the performance figures but it looks a fair tidy motor.

I just clicked everything and got 75k. Equivalent for me is 65k.

It's hard to compare though as the car is more technology heavy. Things like the DSG box will cost more than the original.
Nut on the other hand, some things will be cheaper.
