Factor in the drive train losses then the power advantage of the rs4 only comes into play once weight is a secondary factor and aero is the main so definitely license losing speeds.

Don't underestimate the e46 - IMO it's a great car (and I prefer it to the e92)
don't know about the aero but I'm with you on driveline losses, the e46 has less so the delivered power is probably very close, eating up much of the paper difference

Here's a good way to do a quick check of your car's health

1. find a flat road you can do 100 mph on

2. in 3rd gear, turn off traction control

3. change your OBC to the lap timer, and set it running (don't worry about start/stop)

4. get your phone set to video mode and record the TACHO and OBC LAP TIMER by holding it steady in your right hand (UK) while holding the steering wheel. Press it against the wheel. Make sure you film HORIZANTALLY!

5. start at about 2000 RPM and got wide open throttle (100% matted pedal) all the way till you hit the rev limiter at 8200 RPM, filming the whole time, ensuring to capture the TACHO + OBC LAP TIMER

Post on youtube and we'll figure out the time by pausing on the 3000 and 8000 RPM mark to see how your car compares

Here's mine...excelletn weather (around -3000 feet of density altitude), good fuel (UK/EUR 99 octane), JHM catted 2.75" downpipes and JHM resonated catback exhaust. Carbon cleaned 8000 miles ago for what it's worth.

7.6 seconds I believe.

When I was stock in this type of great power weather, I'd be lucky to hit 8.1-8.2

p.s. Arthur, where's the thread to post these runs?

I know this will attract flak but 100mph one handed on a track is foolish, on a road is dangerous driving. The difference of tenths of a second in everyday driving is indistinguishable, you'd be better investing your time in the other "performance" aspect of the package often overlooked, the driver!

why 1 handed?
you do not shift gears and don't have to move your hands off the wheel (any more than a lane change signal)
you start the timer at 35 mph, hardly risky
and stop it at 95

it is no issue at all on a straight, lightly trafficked highway

btw, you will have to 'drive 1 handed' in this car, if used as intended
shift 3 to 4 at 95 mph
shift 4 to 5 at 130 mph
shift 5 to 6 at 160 mph

I drive '1 handed' all the time
shifting gears at 60 to 70 mph
I try not to do it mid corner though :jump:

two handed is better. Fortunately you can do this two handed. You need only remove a hand to shift. As in normal driving.

Funny enough that's not what you'll catch flak for. You'll catch flak for the silly comment about improving driving skills. We are benchmarking performance and the op of this thread feared his car may have something wrong. The Arthur test is a quick way to check it out. A single pull through 3rd to see how quickly your car chews through the rpms. Maybe you missed...the entire thread.

I agree with sakimano here, dangerous driving indeed, i'll show you dangerous driving ;)

And without a dyno, which i have misgivings about anyway, the timed runs in one gear are a good benchmark.

the only part that I would consider even remotely "unsafe" (and that's really stretching things) is that you could be distracted staring at the dash/phone.
I would say driving two handed looking down way more dangerous than one handed videoing and keeping heads up.

As for one handed in general... you pax me in an autocross event and I'll show you how much control of a car you still have one handed. ;)

In reality you don't even need to look at the dash or the phone. You can hear it approaching redline, but generally I just hit the Rev limiter because it's the best sound ever...
