even if he was thrashing it as long as it was not mechanically over-rev'ed, ie, shifting to a lower gear (missed 4th went to 2nd) and drove the rpm >8200 or so I would argue mechanical defect

the rod is part of the rotating assembly and should be covered if you have any warranty
even if you don't I would argue that it should be covered, this is a failure that should not happen due to wear, but only due to a defect of some sort (or a severe mechanical over rev)

a rod thru the block or oil pan is pretty bad
You're right. I did start typing out something about even if he was thrashing it, as an RS, the engine should handle it and Audi should expect owners of such are to drive them in the manor in which hey were designed, but gave up as it didn't come out how I intended it.

I agree, these engines are designed (and marketed and priced accordingly) to be run to redline under full load repeatedly and sustained
as long as maintained and operated within design boundries: temperature limits, rev limits, oil changes, allow oil to get ot before heavy use, etc., a rod should never break

hopefully Audi won't get smarmy and will do the right thing without too much haggling

I would be gutted, I had the same thing happen to my e46 m3 (which had known rod issues) and it took a lawsuit (which I won) to get reimbursed
took 1.5 years and pissed me off

Hi,

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I bought mine from 5 oaks in July and they were pretty decent when a few items were picked up so hopefully you will be fine.

How many miles did the engine have on it though? I thought the v8 lumps were supposed to be pretty bullet proof?

Hi all,
Thanks very much for all your positive comments, I've only had the car 4 months and I am covered by the comprehensive warranty, the car has a fash, is on 60,000 miles currently and only had a service on 57,000. I'm expecting another call from Portsmouth Audi tomorrow so hopefully will have some more positive news

Hmm, I wonder why they needed it for a whole day. It's all an illusion

the local dealer can only see so much data from the ecu
sometimes they have to send it to Audi AG (or higher up the corp. ladder) to read and diagnose the data before an determination can be made

9/10 times a broken rod is a manufacturing defect

Agree with all the positive comments - it (hopefully) sounds like and open & shut case, and Audi UK normally "do the done thing" so you should be fine

Good luck, and start reading about running in procedures!

Wow a broken con rod is most unusual on the 4.2 - even the high revving ones.

Crikey a leg out of bed!!!!!
I knew E46 M3's did it but not the RS4
What year is the car?

My pal in Johannesburg has an E46 M3 and his did exactly the same - it came to an immediate stop at 80mph and dumped all the oil on the deck.
A con rod had gone through the side of the block - lucky for him he was driving a manual and dumped the clutch and could bring it to a halt , I've heard the DSG ones lock the back axle too when they go.
Eeeek

Good luck with the dealer mate hope you get a good result from them.

Yup - friend of mine did it with his smg car. Said he lost count how many times he hit the motorway barriers with rear wheels locked.

Still no definitive answer from Audi but hopefully will have an answer on Monday once Audi uk have reviewed the photos taken of the damage done.

You might want to mention the loan car RS4 that you are having to hire at £500 per week.... and the fact that you will be pursuing them for reimbursement accordingly....

BTW, mine is available for hire at £499 per week :) (joke)
