I had my wheels off for cleaning and waxing at the beginning of the month and noticed a residue on one front shock.

Its not as bad as Grahams picture but subsequently I took it to the dealer for a check.

They have said it is "OK" but I'm keeping an eye on it as we all know how incompetent dealers are in the main....

It may well be the beginning of the fault but it would appear that I'm in a minority...

Is it possible to check the shocks with the wheels in place?

I had a phone call today from the Service Manager and he has booked my car in for next Wednesday for two days.

I've a slight intermittent knocking on front when covering ramps etc.

Booked it in for inspection, and they found a 'mist' of fluid on one shock. Stated they would replace both front shocks, so arrived at Dealers today to be informed that as it was only a 'mist', then there is no problem.

They have a new letter from Audi stating that if there is only a 'mist' then not to replace.

So there you have it...Audi obviously aware of issue and attempting to reduce warranty claims by accepting that shocks weep slightly.

Not impressed.

I would bank on it that atleast someone on this forum has a contact at Audi, works for Audi or knows to log in and have a look on here. They will be well aware by now of the reported problems and will as you say be looking to reduce the warranty claims. As is always the case its a numbers game it will be cheaper to ignore the mutterings of us lot than recall. All we can do is report facts to them in the hope that they do the right thing. They will also of received a few letters by now enclosing copies of the poll so we will almost certainly see less cars having shocks replaced.
Like I said a few times documenting the problem is key so anyone with rattles must follow up any visits with the dealer with a factual letter detailing what has been done and the reason the dealer gave for it being done. come warranty expiry day this will atleast give you some firm back up when asking for drc issues to be resolved outside of warranty.

I've had my front o/s shock replaced twice in a month by Wayside Milton Keynes and it's still knocking. Are they replacing it wrongly, or missing some crucial part of the process?

Dom - I know it's out of your way, but go to Camberley. They know exactly what they're doing...

Well, it's probably easier to get to than Milton Keynes, so I'll give them a call.

My Cab has been in the dealer since yesterday for front shocks and valves, I'm just waiting for a phone call to say that it's ready. I shall listen very carefully on the way back for any knocking!

Well, I had the phone call and went to pick the car up with all the trepidation - have they kurbed any of the wheels, scratched the bodywork - but no, all was fine. They remembered not to clean it either like I asked them to, I didn't want their dirty rags going over the bodywork thanks.

I must say that there is a marked improvement with the steering, not so much tramlining and also hardly any 'Diving' of the front when say braking for a roundabout. Oh, no knocking noises either.

All in all, a happy chappy.

Graham
