RS4 to Porsche 911?
Re: RS4 to Porsche 911?
I'm surprised you say the C4s needs respect after owning an RS4, I didn't think it was quick at all!

Being fitted hopefully this week - all you need to do for the rs4 is to change the solid rear belt buckles for ones on flexible material mounting.stuwd wrote:Excellent! Someone from Car Magazine stuck one of those in the back of an M3 and raved about it. Genius. Did you get one??adsgreen wrote:Multimac.co.uk
Had a test fitting and looks really great and much easier than even only using three seats.
Also with 5point harnesses all round it is safer as kids tend wriggle out of the 3 point belts.
Will post pics.

Who says 6 seaters have to be dull

Re: RS4 to Porsche 911?
I currently have both, albeit a 996 C4 and opposite to you I am deciding whether to sell the 911.
My heart say's no as it's a minter with only 50k miles, FPSH, 2 previous owners and a full factory fitted GT3 kit but my head says yes as it's a lot of money sat there doing very little other that the odd weekend blat and loosing value!
Comparing the 2 the 911 to me is more raw and if i'm honest much more of a drivers car but the RS4 is a lot more practical, slightly more powerful but harder to throw around at speed. I'm still quite new to RS4 ownership so this may change as i get used to it...

Re: RS4 to Porsche 911?
I found the technique different in the RS4.
The 4wd 911's I've driven have had a lot more rear bias if only from the engine position.
The RS4 benefits from staying longer on the brakes into a corner and being a bit more 'aggressive' on turn in.
The 911 is more delicate and precise.

It's not the speed of the C4S that neds respect, it's its "on the edge" handling.gilford wrote:I'm surprised you say the C4s needs respect after owning an RS4, I didn't think it was quick at all!

That's exactly what I meant, thanks for clarifying that (as ever).gilford wrote:

Done more miles today on my usual Birmingham to Cotswold test route in the RS4 and what a car.
I am sure this saloon is better than my old Avant but not sure why. It certainly goes well with a huge kick at 5500 rpm, nice and loose at 108k miles!
I have always found the roof rail wind noise a bit of a pity on the RS Avants so nice not to have that and also rear tyre noise is less evident due to the enclosed boot.
Definitely quicker than the C4S, a real licence buster as unlike a 911, you really don't notice much difference between 80 and 120 (kph of course!).
Grip in the wet is phenomenal, direction changes (i.e. on and off roundabouts) and be treated with disdain.
My wife loves the RS4 (as a pax) - you can drive it a lot quicker and chuck it around a lot more without complaints.
However driving the 911 is more of an event and you don't have to spank it all the time but if you do it's still good if a little jiggly on bumpy roads - definitely better for your licence though.
Also 911 is significantly better on fuel and lot less to tax (however 997s are £460 too from 3/06>).
RS4 is a cooler car (or less embarassing to turn up somewhere in) as its less showy although the number of hoodies that point at them is a worry.
You could definitely justify having the two though a 997 C2S is probably a lot closer to B7 RS4 as it's a little more supple than 996 when in comfort mode on PASM (adaptive dampers) and has a better dash and prices are now VERY similar!

Ahhh back to the fold?
Re: RS4 to Porsche 911?
It's why I like Elise based cars - I had a loaner of a mk 1 1999 1.8 118bhp Elise whilst the 211 was being serviced. and yes a lot slower but way way more fun on the roads at license safe speeds. All because everything was a little worse and 'raw''.

Re: RS4 to Porsche 911?
Adsgreen - spot on, have cars got too good? The 911 has made me realise that I don't crave speed itself, but the sensation of driving an adjustable car close to its limits, if those limits are breached at lower speeds then that's a positive. However for a daily driver I dont want to get anywhere close to limits and the RS would be an easy choice, same for later Elise over early one maybe?
Lengster - not back to the fold, purely a business transaction, a perk of the job
Off topic but..did some work on the car (discs all round, air box flap) and a while later, chap wanted out - hard to refuse as probably cheapest non write off to ever change hands and a great example if you ignore miles.
Think it's now been sold to a local mechanic friend who is px'ing his 130k Goodwood Green B5 - thank f**k as one day on Autotrader and the people calling are enough to send you to webuycar.com
I always suspected high milers (PG?) would be sweet to drive and this one confirms it, even the (bucket) seat is no worse than some at 30k - considering difference in price between high and low milers, it's important to be very sure the mileage is genuine if you are buying one (or a Porker).

Re: RS4 to Porsche 911?
Totally agree re. Miles
If they've been put on it via motorway, and the car has been looked after then its a no brainer if your gonna save £10k plus

Re: RS4 to Porsche 911?
Small world! I'm sure I've enquired about one of your 911's previously - your last one was a 997 Cab?mac911rs4 wrote:Yeh, 911 or RS4......
well, having had 6 911's as well as other nice cars over the past 14 years, the 911 was always my driving car. I've loved every minute, having had all the models from 964 up, mainly all 4wd until my last one, the 997 911C2S cabrio, swore i'd never have another rear wheel drive 911, but after test driving it, realised that Porsche had really got their act together weight and stability wise. Best 911 if you could, personally i'd say 996 Turbo, most fun i've had ever, the 997 if i could say, as i was loaned one for a week trying to get me to buy it...thought it was too fast, sounds mad, but at slower speeds it just seemed wrong.
My business slowed down and that more so with the fact the two kids were growing, 911 was always becoming a bind on long journeys, but then i didn;t care as i was in the front. Bit the bullett, sold the 911 and the 7 series, waited a while and brought the RS4 Avant, now had it for a month and won't be modding as we wish to have the 3 year warranty we got from Audi kept correct.
Have to say, this is the first time my wife's taken an interest in a car, she loves it, we all fit perfectly, the car as you know drives awesome, it's discreet, it ticks all the boxes, does;t get backs up when pulling into clients car parks and i have to mention, would easily stay with a 911 any day, except turbo.
I'm not gonna let go of the RS4, we love it. if work picks up, i'd buy a 911 for the garage any day of the week, it's an every day sports car, but yes, just a little flashier than an RS4. C hap round b y us just sold his newish M3 as 3 child came along, always longed for a 911, loved the drive i allowed him in the RS, last week saw him purchase and M5, loves all but the almost daily visit to the petrol station, my thoughts, Bug Ugly.
Nice situation to be in, enjoy whatever, all the best. M
Good to see you've seen the light and are in the RS gang now!

I'm sorry, but selling up a 911 and buying an RS4 can be considered growing up, not the other way around.... :S
