I had to do that back in the 90's when I was doing my hgv class 1. Sounds good in the RS now though...

Personally I would not recommend double de clutching on synchro gearboxes.
Unless you are near perfect it can actually cause more wear and tear on the synchros.
Modern synchros work well and the extra driver workload is likely to do more harm than good for zero benefit.

A race car dog box you drive completely different .
Upshifts are clutch less as using it can cause lots of damage. You just apply a fair bit of pressure to the gearshift with foot on the throttle and then quickly lift off and back again. The gear ell just bang in and it needs to be as quick as possible to prevent damage.
Same goes for down shifting. Some people I know are successful without using the clutch but I prefer a quick half dab just to help unload things.

Adsgreen is right you will wear the synchros. Having driven HGVs for a long time with crash boxes clutch less changes saves the leg, also when selecting gears you need to chose wisely when to change otherwise you end up with box full of neutrals a tad embarasing when going up a hill with traffic behind. Upshifts are easy but down shifts tend to focus the mind.

Love the M3 in White, looks stunning!

I would have to powdercoat the alloys black too!

I blip the throttle all the time when I'm changing down.

Boys will be boys!! We are a fair bunch on this forum and support freedom of speech even from people who have left and gone over to the dark side. We are just waiting for the "help I am stuck in the snow, hedge, field". It may be difficult to spot a white M3 in the snow a flag of 4 rings may help in the location of said vehicle :biggrin3: :kissmyrings: :nogarors4:

I think some people are switching, me anyway, due to age of B7 or other factors - here we have the issue in that unfortunately Audi as yet has no replacement for the B7 RS.

RS5 (if you read Evo) has been slated - I dont think they could say anything more negative about the car. RS6 too big for me, R8 not really in budget for me - so M3, if you want a v8 n/a engine, is the direct competitor segment wise for RS4/5. I figure M3 for two years then look at new RS4 if its out and hopefully it will be good because it has to be when it will be compared against the M3.

Also I have been on rs246 since the start - its a good site, still have an Audi and expect to have another - so couldnt leave :beerchug:

According to Gizze on TSN, Dave, his 123d on snow tyres was better then his Audi Allorad. Just add them in the cost of buying a Beemer, or don't go to work that day! Not that Dunc needs to seeing as he has an ur quattro for such occasions anyway, awesome awesome set of cars you have there.

That's the tyres making the difference - which is why BMW (and Audi) have been running advertising campaigns for Winter tyres this year.

Based on my personal experience (RS4 on Summer tyres and C1 on Winter tyres) last winter the RS4 was streets ahead (literally and metaphorically) in snow and/or ice.

A lot also depends on the make of tyres. I'd still like to bet that a winter tyre clad M3 will not do significantly better in the snow than my RS4 with Vredesteins on because the tread pattern is far more open on the latter allowing snow to compact in it meaning it grips to the snow, the exact same prinicple winter tyres work on in the snow. Even PetroDave will I hope be amazed at how much better his RS performs in the snow this year compared to last with his new Vred's on. They may be a summer tyre but they take a lot of beating in the snow.

That all said it is also driver ability. I saw plenty of Chelsea tractors beached last year when I drove past them because they are revving the nuts out of their cars trying to get through drifts and smoothing the snow surface giving zero bite surface even with their 2+ tonne 4x4 tyre behemoths.
