Another dissapointing tear up
Re: Another dissapointing tear up
I don't agree with the 'torque wins races' line.
Every race car I've had has generally been n/a with lower torque than the stock version yet with generally more than double or more hp. The result? Sure, same gearing at same speed you will accelerate slower due to lower torque... But this is driver error - you have to work a fast n/a car. my cars could generally rev 30% higher so when they changed up I still had another 2k revs left to use and that's when you pull away. Doesn't matter if they have more torque lower down - this is wiped out by the gearing effect being higher.
50 in 3rd in the rs4 is out of it's happy zone so you will lose. Turbos have a lot if low down torque which makes them much more flexible to drive on the road and more forgiving of being out of the power zone.
Just remember f1 cars only have 250lb ft torque - it's just they can produce this at 18k rpm to give 800+ bhp.

Ok
I had a go today on the motorway
I think there is something wrong with your car
I did 2nd at 50, WOT
I think the A5 would have been in 3rd all the way, so you prob lost pace changing from 2nd to 3rd as its not the slickest of changes
3rd at 60 thru to 120 the RS would have left it for dust

Keeping the car between 5.5k rpm and 8.5k rpm and I can't see how you could want more speed for road use.

Re: Another dissapointing tear up
Can your really do 120 in 3rd DK?
When I have done the Arthur PE tests it's a tad over 100 for me.
Ice, said he did it all in 3rd which starting at 50mph, I'd rather be in 2nd and change gear for max performance.
When I had a play with a Cayman S, it was the high rev limit of the RS4 that gave me the edge

The change to 4 is much easier to do quickly

Your totally right. Its just a famous quote by Carroll Shelby " Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races" that I had in my Sig for a while. But it has been proven on the track that it does not, as you described.
Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar

It's only as slow as an Avantneckarsulm wrote:Don't forget Ice's car is a cabriolet which is a tad slower anyway.

Re: Another dissapointing tear up
All of you nay sayers regarding torque being more important than BHP, check out this comparison between the RS4 and the S5, keeping in mind the S5 has 60 BHP less but 7 lb/ft more !
and weight is only a factor when taken in the context of BHP per tonne

Re: Another dissapointing tear up
Just get a TTRS and be done with it - chip & Milltek and it is an absolute weapon
Re: Another dissapointing tear up
Oh yes - for about a year or so. I know one who is running 420 or so (Revo Stage 2 + milltek) but others are going further with 600 being the target...
ETA the 420 car is also 600 nm of torque if I remember correctly - just checked & standard TTRS is 340 bhp/450nm of torque so 600 is plausible...

Re: Another dissapointing tear up
mmmmm....so same should apply to the RS3 as its the same engine?

Re: Another dissapointing tear up
I am pretty they are changing the IC + cats to get these results so RS3 may have slightly different end result, but Stage 1 is still about 400 bhp/400 nm so that at least should apply
