whats your daily runabout car?
Put an additional 20k on an RS4 though and it wipes 4400 of its value come trade in time or 6500 for 30k over average, sure running another cars has costs but a decent 5k car will have a retained value at the end,i have an s line a4 avant tdi for work mileage,20 or 30k on that makes peanuts difference in comparison and fuel savings go towards it massively

The RS4 is for using every single day. Don't do it!
I was overly protective of my last car and, on reflection, I wish I wasn't. It was a Z4 coupe and I really wanted a second run around to keep it fresh. Luckily for me the premiums on a second policy (starting at zero no claims) were ridiculous. I'm now glad I got to enjoy that car every day.
Throwing an RS4 into the financial equation might make the buying of a second car a wise move money wise, but ignore this sentence.
Forget all that money stuff. You can afford (and own) a beautiful beast of an RS4. Why have a second car you won't want to drive?

I got a Golf 3 1.6 as my daily runabout! Reason why is the journey is to short from home to work, the Rs4 doesnt even warm up, still has the max 7000rpm when I get to work... But going to buy a bike now for when the weather is good and use that! Currently the RS4 only has 28000 or so miles on it so doesnt get driven much, was only really used as a wknd car as I had a TT as well! oh and its a 2006 RS4
nothing specific about 80k miles, just a number I know. it just sounds like a big number, and most on here dont put mega miles on their RS4s so mine will be worth even less (relatively speaking) if its a high miler.P_G wrote:What's your thought process about selling it before 80k miles? I suppose is it going to loose 5k in value, probably not before hitting 80k, i'd hope not. this has been my dilemma for the last 12 months, and i've enjoyed the car. can afford to run it fun, just something in the back of my head says run the miles up and it will be worth a lot less in another 18 months. Arrgh, i dont know!
hopefully in 12-18 months will be in a 911 or GT-R, so was hoping to enjoy the RS4 but not totally trounce its value. i'd need a 2nd car with the 911 or GT-R anyway.
money wise its not a clear cut decision whether I'm saving much, but i'm thinking its easier to sell a lower mileage car in the future.

Have to totally agree with PG - my daily journey to work is a 20 mile stretch of twisty A-road with very few passing places (for 'normal' cars....there are a few more passing opportunities in the RS!). Even if I've had a mare of a day in the office, I always look forward to jumping in the RS4 & carrying out a few overtakes (where safe to do so, of course!) on the way home.P_G wrote: That and I buy cars for driving, not for occassional use. As said each to their own. I've used the wife's A2 for the commute and part of the appeal of the RS is the fun factor it gives to an otherwise boring commute and putting me in a good mood when I arrive at work. Irrespective of whether it take me 45 minutes or 2.5 hours to drive there 9 out of 10 the RS keeps me happy.
I'd never have bought the RS in the first place if I was concerned about the cost of ownership - I bought it because I want to drive it as often as possible...and as things stand I want to keep hold of it for another 2-3 years at least. I do about 8-9k miles per year, and mine is currently on 67k, so it is at the higher end of the mileage scale, but at least I can drive with a smile....I realise that I may take a hit when it comes to selling but it's worth it.
Must admit we use my wife's Polo at weekends if we need to do longer journeys, but that's more do with saving a bit on petrol costs than anything...plus I wouldn't drive the RS4 so 'enthusiastically' with my wife & nipper in the car.
As many have said, each to their own, but for me the RS4 is the ultimate daily driver...

RS4 - life is too short...
When I had my first ZM Coupe (S50 model), I also bought a runaround VW Bora TDi (I know, I know, but it was a good deal at the time.....) for the v reason of having a 2nd car to put the miles on.
After 6 weeks I had used the Bora once and I ended up 'leasing' it to a colleague for 4 months whilst he waited for his new M3 to arrive! Subsequently sold it and luckily didn't really lose any money on it as a result.
As P_G said, I grin every morning I get in the RS4 and push the starter button and it makes a shitey, cold, wet winters' morning that much more bearable....

It may well work in your situation then. GT-R and 911 Turbo are different cars from the RS4 which doesn't fit the model I was originally suggesteing, hence each to their own. That said it seems a shame not to use the RS4 as often as you can before trading it. You may as well trade it now and get your GT-R / 911 Turbo and a second 'run around' as both of them will be even more expensive to run / maintain than the RS4.psg001 wrote:nothing specific about 80k miles, just a number I know. it just sounds like a big number, and most on here dont put mega miles on their RS4s so mine will be worth even less (relatively speaking) if its a high miler.P_G wrote:What's your thought process about selling it before 80k miles? Citroen C1 4 days per week = low fuel, insurance & servicing bills
RS4 Avant 1 day per week = BIG smiles
I did a spreadsheet that shows my fuel bill to work using the RS4 5 days a week would be £4800 - owning, buying and running the C1 costs LESS than 1/2 that if I run it 4 days per week so I'm saving over £2000 per year.

Gone: 2006 B7 RS4 Avant (Phantom Black)
C1 for me on the A19 40 mile rush hour commute every morning = insanity. Catch 22 for me, if I didn't work for who I do I couldn't afford the RS4 so If I worked close and didn't have the monotony drive then I would have the car we all so love and enjoy!
So my only vice is the RS4 and yes the fuel is £90 a week for 45 weeks of the year but its worth it.

I bought a 911 C2 S which fitted in the garage which was a result, the intention being that the RS would be sold shortly afterwards. However, when it came down to it, the RS got used 95% of the time and in the end I realised I had become really attached to the car. So, after 6 months, the 911 went and the RS remains but this will be it's final year as I will be selling in the Spring...I'm trying to ready myself for the day I hand the keys over but, I'm struggling with that thought already.
