Be patient (not a blokes greatest attribute I agree).
Couldn't agree more - that's a great example he's got (I should know) just hold out and make the effort to look around...

Thanks a lot for the comments guys, they are very encouraging, I have not given up on the RS4, I am just running out of options, the muggy is at the very top end of the mileage I was looking at and it does not have folding mirrors, so it's close but not perfect.

As a few have already said, hold out and keep looking a little longer.
If you settle for second best i.e. the S5, you'll only regret it; more so since you've had your heart set on an RS4 for so long.

Wee story for you on RS4 ownership which I'm sure a few others on here can relate to:
Middle of summer and I had just spent all morning washing, polishing and giving the insides a complete clean out.
Drove down the road to the local Tescos for a shake down run and to fill her up.
The store is located on top of a hill and has a short windy road which passes then goes round the back of the petrol station before doubling back.
I like to leave it in 1st coming up the hill - especially with the Non-Res Milltek - to "herald" to all my arrival (Yes I'm a tosser and need to grow up!)
Anyway, as I rounded the corner looking for a free pump I see a guy with his 10 plate, Ibis White S5 at the front pump all proud of himself with his new toy, having a sly glance over.
Pump behind him is free so I pulled up directly behind (with a completely unnecessary blip of throttle as I stop), his body language said it all - thunder stolen!

I can't really comment on the S5 as I've never driven one however the way I see it is the S model is only the 2nd best model in Audi's line up.
The RS badge is the flagship and regardless of whether it be the RS2, RS3, RS4, RS5 or RS6. You will subconsciously look upon all others further down the food chain as the inferior model!

+1
before i bought my RS4, i had a 'sensible' train of thought where i should buy an s4 or even a cheaper impreza, and use the money i saved to put into mortgage etc. I know in my heart had i done that, it would have turned out to be more expensive in the long run, as I'd inevitably end up selling that car at a lower price in order to buy the RS4
Just get one, you wont regret it!
Though if your criteria are folding mirrors you may as well give up or buy some to retro-fit

I saw that coming too, they must have a load tied up in that vehicle, I was fortunate mine got traded for a brand new q5 and rs5 so there would have been a load of spare cash in that deal allowing for movement on the price of mine.

I think they think it's too cheap and is putting potential buyers off, thinking there might be something wrong with the car, and audi are going for a cheap off load.

i had a flip up between the s5 and rs4, s5 because of the gadgets (hill hold, keyless entry etc) but the rs4 for the performance and the badge, pleased i went for the rs4 totally love it, very very very thirsty but the way i drive doesnt help but i dont care, soooooo worth it.

the opportunity to get the cash in the bank for the end of year has passed them by now maybe?

Used car prices seem to be holding up well at the moment, the end of Dec discounts were a flash in the pan - last time i looked there were just 340000 cars on Autotrader, it's usually around 360000, last time it was that low was 2009 when there was a shortage of stock.
I think the recently inflated new car prices and the lack of availability for new cars (many popular Audis have delivery times of months ahead) is keeping used car prices high.
just look at 6 year old Mk5 Golf GTIs and 2004 A4 Avants with the Sport bodykit some of which are still worth £9k, only £20k new back then!

Tbh, I'm really pleased with my self, I got a killer bargain and to think I nearly waited until the end of january, this car was really my last hope, had it not happened I would be in an s5.
