Opinion from PH today appears much the same:
There's no doubt that the RS5 is a breathtaking quick and competent car and, if it had a simple S badge, it could be a great one, too. But the RS label brings with it an expectation of satisfying the desires of a more committed type of enthusiast, and on that count I reckon it doesn't quite score highly enough.

I like old school, after all a V8 isn't exactly in keeping with the times :D
if you need an auto buy an auto, if you don't buy a manual.
I've driven loads of DSG cars and while they are fun for a bit, I never get disappointed when I get back in a manual.
Plus it's the first to be mated to a V8 so no doubt it's going to break.

At the end of the day if you like the RS5 or any other car, buy it. Do not take any notice of other peoples views because it is you who will be driving it. Having said that we are swayed by what other people think .

The Rs5 would have taken my money next year if it had been reviewed as a Rs4 + a bit more, but for now I can't think of anything to replace it with.

The cost of the next years warranty/service etc compared to the cost of change is peanuts

I probably err on the side of "luddite" as far as gearboxes go, but there is no question when driving a GTR at maximum attack, one has to appreciate the merits of its gearbox.

I think that experience has meant that IMO if you've got a car with a good dsg/smg gearbox, it can be just as raw an experience as a brutally fast manual. However, while there is no doubting its faster, can it ever be as satisfying.....

Ultimately, the RS5 is a GT car not a sports car.

The next gen ur-Quattro is a different paradigm and should be more CSL/GT3-like I reckon.

I agree with Terry's comments though about the propensity of motoring journalists to conclude a car is "good" if you can drift it round corners. On a public road thats just going to get you locked up these days.

Doesn't it make you feel good when you read glowing references to the RS4!

It's as though Audi have misplaced the recipe somewhere; they just don't seem to have it in them to bring out another RS4 to match the B7.
Agreed re EVO....especially now they have Monkey Harris on board - I think he more than makes up for the loss of Bovingdon etc when they left..

So, what would everyone here choose out of the 4 cars on test?

Despite having had several M cars over the past few years (and loving them!), I would opt for the C63 everytime (providing it had the performance pack plus, LSD and other 'key options' EVO have noted)...

I thought my RS4 sounded good until a friend turned up to a group gathering over the summer in his C63 estate.... I would, however, struggle to get back up to Perthshire at Xmas time... :?

I was in the dealers earlier this month specing up an RS5, just short of 70k, they offered me 27k on a car iv had from new with a FASH in mint nick, the biggest problem i have, is the RS5 40k better than my B7-RS4, I dont think so, its just not good enough, dont get me wrong it was a nice car to drive but it wasnt 20k better let alone 40k better than the car i already have. the RS6 is such a better proposition from where im sitting. and once you start pay around 70k for a car theres loads out there.

i just dont think there going to well with this car.

take it easy

Wow, £70k.
There's a choice of R8s for that money - stunning looks, good reviews - no brainer!
