Is it not possible for 10mm spacers to the front?

That is per wheel, so 20mm axle width and 16mm axle length.

Does fitting of spacers negatively affect any aspect of handling etc on a road car that has everything configured for certain dimensions, load, angle etc and is there a max size that be safely fitted?

Sims yes, the more width you put on the axle the more the wheels negative camber angle will change (technically).

i think jonathanturners picture is of an RS4 with SS+ (Red RS4 saloon with rear 10mm spacers)

does look sweet. I need to get some rear spacers!
