Thanks for all the responses.

I will most probably press ahead with the Milltek system. My main concern was to get something that needn't sound too loud unless I want it to.
Quite happy to have something pretty aggressive when I'm out on my own, but need something a little more civilised for the when the passenger windbag is activated (i.e. when the wife-to-be is aboard.)

I'll let you know what I think of it once it's fitted.

Are you going for resonated? I'm guessing so by your comments about the other half?

Forgot to mention....the non-res pops and crackles on the overrun - amazing!

I don't think you'll be disappointed :D

Glad I went for the non-resonated/valved in the end, I originaly had the resonated/valved but I thought it didn't have enough 'bark' in it - it does now though! lovely.

For those interested in Tubi...
Marcus,

Thanks for your email.

There are actually a number of different options of tubi exhaust for the car - we'll list them all here but in actual fact, there is really only one system you SHOULD go for.

1. Normal Tubi exhaust
2. Normal Tubi exhaust with valve operation (also available with wireless remote control function)
3. Racing Tubi exhaust
4. Racing Tubi Exhaust with valve operation. (also available with wireless remote control function)

a) You may specify the exhaust in two variations of end tip also - the Porsche-style four exit type OR the normal oval Audi-style.
b) Further - you may specify (at additional cost) the oval tip in a ceramic black finish!

(please bear in mind that "Sport" mode operation on the RS4 is totally unaffected even with the valve-less exhaust systems fitted).

We would warn against specifying the racing versions of the tubi because they are simply too loud for all but the most outrageous and committed of customers. They are a huge hit with our customers out in the States, and the Middle East but they're just too loud for MOST customers here in the UK.
Also, we do not *typically* recommend the Tubi exhaust options with valve operation. To our ears, these valves do not do very much for controlling the sound of the system and on dyno tests, they do NOT increase torque at low rpm (in the valve closed position) like the valve operated Tubi exhausts systems on Ferraris/Lamborghinis.
Feedback from the Tubi Italy told us that, to be honest they are only really required for the German or Swiss market that require valve operation in order homologate the exhaust (legally) for those particular countries. If you really want to push the boat out, a wireless remote control valve operated function is now available by special order from Tubi Style but once again, it's really not necessary.
For this reason, our recommendation is option one. Tubi without valves - normal volume.

The reason we like this version so much is basically because the volume level at all revs is just really beautifully judged so that it doesn't need any additions or valve operation. At low rpm is sufficiently docile for there to be no boom, no resonance, no vibration or intrusion. And and when you hit the throttle, it's got a classic V8 rumble with a sound level that develops linearly without the need for valves to open or close. Outright, the sound is not too loud as to be obnoxious but you can really hear the V8 has been freed up!
The reduction of backpressure at high rpm results in a small power increase in the region of some 14hp so it delivers on all levels.

The cost of the recommended non-valve system is £1360 + VAT The system carries a full international non-transferrable life time warranty.
We charge £90 + VAT to install.

I hope this helps - if you have any queries do call through on 01784 434395 or send us an email!

Regards

Manu

That's a fair bit more than the equivalent Milltek then. And typically down South.

Does sound nice though on Youtube vids.

From the general enquiries I've been making and reading comments on the Board, the budget for the Cat-Back Milltek (Resonated) system including exhaust valves is c. £1,686.00. I suspect a fitting charge will be added to this.

Personally, this would be my likely choice (to ensure we stayed friendly with the neighbours) but I'm wondering whether anyone in Central Scotland has this set up, so I can hear the set-up for myself !?!

Skip - did you get the Milltek installed. It's likely that (if I were to go for the system) that I'd get Jim Curley at Star Performance in Kirkcaldy to fit it.

Comments welcomed ! 8) D.

Check out ebay. Roadrunner (they package themselves as i think jct 26 or something) are in Nottingham and they offer an inclusive price that I beleive includes fitting. They then offer a discount for supply only.

It was in fact the Roadrunner advertisment in this months Audi Driver magazine which prompted me to think, "maybe Milltek time" !!! The price I quote is from that Advert ! Thanks for the reply though. I'm swithering !!!!

Is there really that much difference in sound between 'valves open' and 'valves closed'?
because £840 for some valves seems a bit steep - is there real value in this?

Good point - my presumption was that the valves could be attached in the same way as the Stock exhaust to reduce low Rev noise. Don't know what the Milltek does to CO2 emissions either ? (just thinking a new VED Tax they may introduce for non OEM exhausts !).

Early days P_G - a sale of the RS was under consideration but post CE08, no chance so therefore the Milltek idea has raised its head !! I'm not big on "boom boom shake the room" aftermarket exhausts (as you know from me going for the Blueflame on the R32) but in the first instance, I'd like to hear the Milltek fitted on an RS4 !

Likewise, it's a while since I heard Phil Millington's RS4 on a dyno day at AMD a year or so ago.

I must also arrange to meet caldy at some point since he's local to hear what AAS can do.
