I don't doubt that diesel can be made quick at all, hell, why not go for gas or steam turbine and have a turbine the size of shoebox producing 1000+bhp but it detracts from the essence and passion of a petrol sportscar.

I'm not disagreeing, just voice a possibly reason for not doing this.

It is like a Ferrari, them come in all colours, but which one would you really choose - red. If you had a perfect sportscar that pretty much did the same thing irrespective what engine it had, what would you choose diesel or petrol?

AMG did a diesel model a few years back but it was dropped after a short run. We asked on a tour of the AMG facility and the guide responded it was not a direction AMG wanted to go in.

Trouble is in "Real world" driving, you need most of your grunt low down and lots of it, the 4.2TDI provides and really is economical, which very soon will factor into our equation. The prospect of £5.50 per gallon is not too far off, for me yes I can afford it, will I pay it NO.

Is this reason enough?! Saying that, diesel RS4? hmm...... Nah....

Nope, still can't see it.....

I thought Phil (the power) T would be too busy practising his darts for the lakeside to know anything about cars? :D

V10 TDI engine in R8 has already been investigated by a UK automotive consultancy for Audi.

My remapped 4.2TDI sport would eat 535D mapped cars, it had 380BHP 785NM.
Just curious, as i owned a 535d M-Sport & had the DMS treatment, but although your quoted power is a good 40BHP higher, the lbsft is actually on a par (ish) & with the 535 being quite a bit lighter, is eat the correct term?? I'm sure it's a par but not so sure it would out drag. Also doubt it would go as a win to the Bimmer either, i'd tie them.

Although the idea makes sense, i'd hate Audi to dilute the RS with a Diesel or BMW to do the same with M. I bought the 535d & mapped it as i though the idea was great & tbh the car was awesome, but a diesel just does not equal sports car or even sporting, no matter how quick it is. Great compliment to how diesels have come of age, but i'd not buy a Sports Marque with a diesel engine.

True but it could at least keep up and corner with the exotic petrol machines.

I would bet money it will happen its good for business good to keep the green segment quiet and may actually be fun.
