btw stevez, since you're not buying the car for another year now. why not just wait and see what 30k gets you in that time or do you really have to make your mind up right now??

I'm not going to make my mind up now, I just want to get a guide as to what is likely to be in my price range. From what i've read so far it looks like the RS4 is going to be out of reach.

a good spec rs4 saloon now would cost upwards of 46k. thats abt 7-8k drop in price (takin in options as well). i cant see it losing another 15-16k within another 12 months....

The cheapest RS4 on the used locator is 43k, but without sat nav. So that's lost at least £7k already

And your point?
First year depreciation is bad on anything. It doesn't mean the RS4 is closer to his budget.

I don't have a point, merely pointing out the cheapest available saloon on the used car locator.

There's one for £43k on Autotrader with full tech pack.

My concern however is depreciation of a £50k asset. Anyone any thoughts on what the retail value of a RS4 saloon will be in 2 years time?
You posted the same question nearly a year ago... Nothing wrong with that, but it's a long way out (even now) to make an accurate judgement

These are emotional purchases not sensible financial ones - I'm in the djcevo / dociain / jezzer camp on this one

Steve, realistically you're looking at around 40k for a decent spec RS4 towards the end of 2007. If you go for a '55 plate with mega miles on the clock you may also be able to get one for mid 35s but can't see any dropping down to your budget by that stage....unless you go for an LHD/poorer specced car.
Current: C7 RS6 - Black, VW Passat CC R36 - Black, Freelander 2 - Black
Sold: 911 C4S (991) - Black, Panamera Turbo ('11) - Carrera White, Nissan GT-R - DMG, B8 S4 - Phantom Black, B7 RS4 - Daytona grey saloon, Noble M400, Golf R32, Evo VIII MR, M3, Cooper S, Civic Type-R, BMW 120D (black), Mazda 6 MPS

Not sure I entirely agree, otherwise we would all give up the equity in our property/investments and go and spank it on a Fezza.

For me it's about minimising risk and therefore making a better financial decision (I know the asset will depreciate once I buy it, it's just when is the right time to buy i.e. when the depreciation curve bottoms out a bit)

When you say decent spec. what do you think needs adding? When I last looked the only thing I wanted adding was the tech pack.

That's what I'd be looking for too...there was a car for £43k or so the other day on autotrader without the tech pack. Other options which some people might want include sports suspension, mobile phone prep, TV reception and carbon ceramic brakes (although I've seen no RS4 with this yet).

But surely it's all relative. I mean in a year from now 30k is still a lot to be spunking on a higher mileage two and a half year old car.

I have the joy of owning it now , it's outside on my drive with under 2k miles and it brings a smile to my face every time I jump in it.

Alright you may want to own one but it may still be out of your price range in say a year from now.

I reckon it will take a hit when the new M3 comes out but as people have said on here we have a situation where they are going to stop manufacturing the B7 RS 4 to make way for other sports models at Quattro GmBH.

So I'd say suck it and see, maybe you'll be able to pick up an M6 for 30 k in a year, now that would be a good buy!

Thing is, I'm going to be even happier driving it when the new M3 is out. At the moment the RS4 might be seen as the logial (or even only) choice for a high performance compact saloon, but once the BMW appears I still want to be in the Audi...

Although only losely related to this thread, of 8No '07 plate cars leaving my dealer on 1st March, 4 were RS4's, 3 tt's and an A4 tdi. Amasing how the demand is sustained for prestige cars. One of the better guides to this thread is what people have been offered as guaranteed future value at the 3 year mark if they've bought the car on finance. From my previous experience you would expect retained value something around the 45% to 50% mark (about 60% to 65% at 2 years) for a performance car like this particularly if your getting a 50K mile'r at three years.
Present:...
Lotus Evora GT410 Sport, Caterham 420R, CCM Spitfire, VW T2 Bay Window 1976

Past:
DB11 AMR, 992, 991.2, Yamaha MT01, 640d Gran Coupe, 635d Coupe, RS6 C5, Audi TT 225 Coupe, Astra with wind up windows, Citroen ZX, Rover 213, yes behold, a Rover 213... Renault 5
