My oil light went on at 600 miles on my B7 RS4, one of many headaches I've already dealt with at just 1600 miles. (Clutch master cylinder replaced before delivery, oil light on at 600 miles, busted CV boot at 1600 miles, yes it is currently in the dealer) ENJOY this GREAT $80,000 car!!!

My low oil light came on at 640 miles, MOBIL 1 0W-40 Fully Synthetic, best oil in the world, if not ask Porsche, Chevrolet Corvette, Ferrari, Aston Martin, etc.

How odd. Over in Europe the manual states VW 504 spec which is 5w-30 not 0w-40

In fact they use now 5w-30 instead of 0w-30 because they had too many complains from customers that on long run like expected with Long-Life they had to regularly add oil.
As already during the first thousands of miles it sips more oil, with 0w-30 it is even worse...

Go back to 5w-30 as now they recommend and you will have less often to check. Personnally as winter is really cold where I stay I accept to live with the drawback for my S4v8 but still to use 0w-30 (in fact Mobil-1 0w-40 like you).

If you go to Audi.com, there is a complete list of oils that can be used for your engines. Many are 5w-40 and many are 0w-40, Audi does not recommend any type of oil with a low viscosity like 30. Nidfix here in the USA Audi uses VW502-00

Audi.com is the American site.

In Europe 5w-30 is what is recommended in the manual and is what comes with the car ie VW504

Audi.com is not an American site, audiusa.com is. VW504 has been used for over 10 years by VW-Audi, VW502 is newer and is recommended in the US due to our stop and go traffic, much more crowded roads on this side of the world.

I cannot speak for US but in Europe VW502.00 has been superseded by VW503.01 several years ago which itself has been recently replaced by VW504.00.
In my book, they say that you can use VW502.00 but not on LongLife kind of service. I think the reason why they still recommend VW502.00 in US is because oil service is done far more often than in Europe (5000 miles vs 15000).
The same way VW504.00 5w-30 is currently what is recommended by Audi in Switzerland.

Moreover I had a quick look on Audi USA recommended list of oils (http://www.audiusa.com/common/images/Au ... _Chart.pdf) and I can find 5w30 oils even they are far less numerous than 5w40 or 0w40.

Anyway, it was my 2cts to explain how you can try to reduce a bit your oil consumption

The oil that takes in all specs is one that is approved to VW504/507

The likes of Castrol Edge 5w-30, Mobil1 ESP 5w-30, Motul VW Spec 5w-30 and Fuchs Titan GT1 5w-30 all meet these specs and are bang up to date in VAG oil terms.

You'll find data on them here: http://www.opieoils.co.uk

The handbook for my July 2006 delivered UK spec RS4 Avant says this:

LongLife Service VW 504 00

Fixed service interval VW 502 00 or 504 00

This implies that VW 502 00 is a LOWER Specification oil than VW 504 00, since it is not suitable for LongLife Service usage.

In the UK many (most?) Audi dealers use Castrol Edge 5W-30, and this clearly states that it meets or exceeds VW 504 00.

Slightly off subject but what determines the service interval types? Style of driving or personal preference?

I was thinking just the same today.
My service indicator says that the next service is in 542 days time, which I don't think is true!?
