So there it is chaps, definitive answer me thinks.

Anything in the manual about not running the engine for short periods. i.e. letting it get to operating temperature everytime?

I don't think letting it sit idle to warm up is a good idea, if I recall rightly the instruction with the M3 is to take off straight away, the idea is to vary the rev's to allow working surfaces to bed in, sitting at a fixed rev is not a good idea, at the end of the day it is common sense.

No modern car should be left on idle to warm from a cold start up even when run in. During this period unburnt feul can enter the exhaust system and knacker the cats. the book advises to start up and drive straight off.

Only thing I can add to the running in proceedure is to try and let the car operate in it's natural power band, and not let it drop too low in the rev range labouring the engine. You will feel where the engine seems to want sit most comfortably , probably somwherer between 2750 and 4750 revs and as gaaza says work the car up and down this rev range not holding too long in any one gear.

1000km is only about 600 miles, believe me you will cover that in no time when you get your cars :luckybastards:
Too much is bad.
Plenty is better.
