Paper trail of the work done,
Good hard smooth pull from low rpm until redline,
No flat spots in the rpm range,
S mode works,
Pop the oil cap, clean color alloy inside engine means regular services,
Smooth gear changes,
No clicking on full steering rotation
Feel the discs, check for a lip from wear

If pass all above, doesnt really matter about mileage if shes a keeper

I noticed the "no clicking on full steering lock rotation" comment to check.
Are you just referring to worn cv joints or is there another more specific rs4 fault there?

Bought mine with 156k on it, last year, lots of history, very tidy, considering. Drives like new, now on 163.5k and made 427ps on the rollers last week. Was cheap to buy too.

Question - if bought from a garage with an extended warranty added as an extra - wouldn't some of the potential issues be cleared up FOC as and when they arose?

Take it to a garage that "knows" these vehicles or specializes in Audi prior to buying it.

Ask them to check for the common issues you have read about here.

Don't over think it or you will be put off. Every car of this kind of nature has a list of common issues. Full service history
is the first place to start and copies of the invoices with the work done. That way you know what has/hasnt been done recently (vacuum leaks, carbon clean etc).
