It's not for me I'm afraid. Silver cars just don't float my boat and also more miles than I'm looking for.

Good luck with the sale though.

Bryan

I don't understand why mileage puts people off I really don't. On a forum members car, that's been loved, a car with 100,000 miles is far better than a autotrader car with 60k on it from Joe Bloggs Motors Ltd.

Totally agree Ross. I bought a 100k mile car over both an 18k mile and 32k mile car due to its impeccable history and prior ownership. It really wanted for nothing and continues to. I've had high mileage and low mileage cars before and it's all down to condition. If a car is low mileage it could also have been sat around for ages or driven on short journeys and therefore not warmed up especially well, both of these things can course headaches later on. Often cars with higher mileage that have been maintained by an enthusiast mean a lot of known and unknown faults have been rectified already. Down to personal choice really I guess, but my view is condition is key.

Yep, totally agree. My car did 67k miles in it's first 3 years so was obviously sat on motorways but looked after under warranty and has since only done 35k in the last 4 years so hardly worth worrying about. Condition is definately the key as that's an indicator on how it's been looked after. I'm not a fan of buying from garages as they often just fill you with the b******t to get a sale and hide any faults hoping the worthless warranty will cover them should you find fault later.
Just wish my car was a more desirable colour as it would've been snapped up already haha.

Al,

Yes, very tempted by yours. Ideally looking for an Avant, but the history and recent work you've had done make it a good candidate. Going to wait for a while longer for an avant before seriously considering a saloon.

Good luck with the sale anyway.

Cheers,
Bryan

With regard to various comments about the mileage, I actually agree with the principal that higher mileage doesn't necessarily mean a worse car. It can however, make it less valuable. This is common sense guys and the market will dictate that. Take a car at 60k with a new set of disks and pads, a recent clutch and some DRC work done in the last 6 months. Then take a 100k car with the same recent work. I know what most people would consider the better bet.

The B7 is not old enough to be considered a classic, where condition is always the most important factor. Therefore, mileage is a consideration.

I'm actually in contact with someone on here who may be selling their car. It has more miles than I would want, but the spec, condition, recent work and frankly the responsiveness and honesty that the potential seller has shown to my long list of questions is way more important that a trader saying "full service history" or "it's only got 50,000 miles on it".

I'm 100% with you about where to source one. A forum owned car is top of the list, then a private sale, with traders coming a distant third. Not one of the traders I've contacted can give me straight answers about recent maintenance. I therefore don't see how the extra 15% on top of the price can be worth it.

Anyway, something will come up sooner or later. I'm in a fortunate position where I have access to another car and also that I have cash waiting. I'm also self-employed so can travel at short notice, to where the sale is.

Cheers,
Bryan

Fair play to you mate. Be interesting to see what you eventually buy.

I do agree with some of the comments others say. A well maintained car is a must but one with low mileage is also very desirable! Personally my budget could only buy me one with 86k on the clock last year. If i had a bigger budget then i would have defiantly brought one with less miles (personal preference). Its the same when it comes to the servicing. I know many people have different views about where it was serviced and how often but in many cases people would like a full dealer service history. I brought mine with full Audi service history and whilst i believe a good friend of mine who is a decent mechanic would do a service (alot cheaper) i want to retain as much value in her as possible. So unfortunately i have had to bite the bullet and take it to the stealers!

Is the value important to you then? If you buy it for £5k less than your budget and know you'll sell it for £5k less when it comes to parting with it - what difference does the value make?

No right answer here. Just different people want different things. If everyone wanted only low or average mileage cars, then higher mileage ones would be worth nothing at all. Simple market forces.

I'm trying to think of an analogy with women in their 20s and women in their 40s. Probably best leave it there....!

Although women in their 40's have 'experience' and do that thing with their tongue that an RS4 just can't do...
