There's a short video.
In short, it sounds like a rough diesel.

whoa that's rough.
is it lumpy and missing?

Worth checking the oil separator as this iirc is vacuum controlled and is responsible for catching blowby oil and returning to the sump. It's notoriously fragile and if fails will clog up with oil allowing a steady stream into the intake (not great) and also leak vacuum like nobody's business.

Blimey that does sound rough and nothing like the normal chain noises.

(you sure somebody hasn't swapped your V8 for a Transit engine?)

If you had stopped in South London you wouldn't have any noise, ie you would not have an engine. I am allowed to say this as I am originally from saf London

Right, a sad update follows:

Had a guy come up from York to look at the car. Noise is coming from a piston. Have been told it's an engine out job, which will most likely require a rebuild. Quick estimate of the top of his head will be "*hopefully* under £10,000". Felt like vomiting right in his face! Haha.

He's going to give to me an accurate quote to take engine out, and give a fully diagnosis, then a final quote for parts and total labour.

Anyone have any previous experience? Does the estimate seem accurate? (don't want to type that number again!)

Going to have a look around and see if they can give me any other quotes.

Depressed. Reeeeallly depressed right now.

   id be getting more than a few quotes first and im fairly sure pistons can be removed in place its just a lot more time consuming and harder, people always say "take the engine out" as its way easier to strip an engine. Its a catch 22 really, time wise would be quicker taking out the engine

Can't even take the valve heads off in place as far as I can tell from elsawin.

10k is a fair whack. Taking the engine out whilst a pita in the right workshop with the right tools it should be that long.

I would say taking the rocker covers off as a start as that can be done in place.

Next a compression test - some failed would show up and easy and quick to do.

Also might be worth an endoscope into the cylinder of even just take the intake manifold off and peek in the combustion chamber.

Do you have a warning light on?

He put Vagcom on and no timing or misfiring errors came up which I thought was strange considering hiw ruined it sounds. Only the couple that I have had before:
O2 sensor and starter motor relay fault. Both unrelated obviously.

Will definitely get other quotes. Will give Revolution a ring tomorrow for starters.

And the suspected piston (or possible pistons) were at the back, closest to the timing chain.

For that money try mrc,amd and grizz at unit20 aswell. Flatbed costs pale into insignificance here i think.

I feel for you. GL man

Will do. Heard good things about Unit 20.

And cheers for the sympathy. Euromillions tomorrow, a little win would go down very nicely now. Ha

Fcuk a rebuild for that money. I'd be buying a second hand lump.

That's a nasty kick in the scrote.

Who would spend 10k on a repair? Someone on here a new engine fitted by Audi a couple of months back wasn't that 12.5k? He had most of the cost covered by Audi ?
