Just to think Audi spent tonnes of time and money on research and development to get the intake valves looking like this.
I know :audibash: ...............at least it gave me the excuse to go stage 2 manifold :bigblink:

I was hoping to do cleaning this weekend, blaster end has turned up just awaiting walnut media now :(

I am also now wondering if to remove all the SAI pipework aswell as the pump or is this a pretty worthless exercise do you think?

I still don't get why this happens, is there not a way of sorting the cams so the valves are actually shut and you don't get the blowback of carbon/oil mess?

I am no expert but its not blowback from the cylinders, its re-circulated in the oil breather system and hits valves/ports from behind I believe :assflash:

On normal injection engines (not direct injection) fuel washes over them through the inlet manifold hence the lack of carbon build up.

I think the consensus is that it is due to valve overlap for EGR purposes. There is no EGR valve as such, but, by design, an amount of [dirty] exhaust air is reused and the theory is that this eventually displays itself as deposits on the intake valves.

A small amount of oil is recirculated for sure so this probably doesn't help and is maybe why the stuff is "gummy". If you remove the inlet manifold and open it up there is always a covering of oil.

That makes much more sense... I just couldn't get my head round why the valves would see any of the exhaust gasses.

I've just taken my inlet mani off for the second carbon clean and it's gunk ed up again. Nowhere near as much as 50 k worth but still bad for 1.5 years . I just don't see where it's coming from. If it comes in from the oil separator at the back then why is the hole to it clean ? I'm tempted to block the oil separator off totally. But then what to do with the top of the rocker covers? Just stick a filter on and vent to atmosphere?

It's not the oil IMO that is the problem. The major factor is the soot/blackening which is, IMO, due to the valve overlap which is what Audi call "internal EGR".

If you open up the manifold itself you'll very likely see a good coating of oil on the inside plate. I bet it's very clean.

I think it's the oil that just makes the soot slightly "gummier"/stickier than if no oil was present.

Bit of an update gents, did some more prep last night ready for cleaning tonight :piss:

Head port mating faces protected, cleaned cam covers and filter housing:

Cleaned and re-oiled panel filter (did my bike at the same time as the cleaner was out):
Image

Cleaned all other removed parts ready for refitting:
Image

Fabricated and put together parts for walnut blasting/removal:

So on to tonight.............................not a job I am particularly looking forward too

Also spoke to MRC today stage 2 manifold on route :jump:

I asked if replacing this would be a good idea to which they replied "yes ideally" but at £135.00 I think I will leave it and take the risk  ridiculous price for a bit of moulded plastic!!

Hate seeing car and not using it :( roll on Thursday next week:

Careful with the oiled filter you will kill your MAF pretty quickly

Think rick means that if you over oil the filter the excess oil clings to and ruins the maf/air flow sensor, it looks a lot in the pic but it's bare minimum oil coverage to turn cotton from white to red :bigblink:

Got 4 of the 8 ports done tonight, pics to follow tomorrow.

Rick it would be good to see a pic of yours after a year and a half, how many miles since the last carbon clean?

I am not doing it again after this though, what a pain in the :assflash:

I'll post a pic when I'm back on the Internet. Currently on my phone and it's a pain.

Re the oil on the filter they gave been known to kill the maf s even a small amount. That's why revolution moved from oiled pipercross to a 2 stage dry filter. There's a thread about it.
