How about if you took both cars to tackle the same piece of road with both straights and curves every day for a year. Get the average time. I know which would be quicker even if you excluded snowy days. I understand the grin factor but I am all about point to point speed.

Also, at the lights the RS4 would be there coz you'd get a cars length on launch then just move in front of him :)

Obviously it depends on the road, but I'd beg to differ if the Merc was driven by someone handy at the wheel. One of the main differences in the manners of the cars is that you can get most of the potential from an RS4 with very little skill, but with the Merc, it's a very easy car to overdrive and wash all your speed away with big smokey wheelspins out of corners.
Pro racing driver vs pro racing driver, the Merc would win every time I'd guess

B8 RS4 on the other hand, now that's a different story :)
-------------------------------------------------------
Gone - 11/06 B7 RS4 Avant - black/black (Daily drive & kids taxi)
Gone - 05/13 B8 RS4 Avant - Suzuka grey (Daily drive & kids taxi)
Gone - 01/14 B8 RS5 Coupe - Short term car
Gone - 09/14 B8 RS4 Avant - Misano Red/Ceramics (Daily drive & kids taxi)

Current - 04/18 B9 Rs4 Nardo Grey
ZX10R Race bike - 210bhp and a few skid marks on the seat ;)

Hard to compare fast road vs fast track though.
No matter how pro the driver the RS4 will be considerably more forgiving. A good proportion of fast road driving is more "balls" than "skill".
To get the merc really flying youd need to have it perfectly balanced which is tricky enough.

On track it depends on the circuit.
Somewhere like Silverstone which is pure power then yes, the merc would pull away comfortably.

Somewhere like say oulton park or brands indy where the straight line speed is less important or the surface is less than perfect then not so clear cut.

Don't underestimate 4wd - sure it gives you the ability to get harder on the power sooner out of a corner but I've found it to help masses under braking giving a nice corner entry allow crazy deep trail braking. The RWD cars I've driven (esp front engine ones!) really are a bit scary in this case when the back goes light.
The real bastard is that you can't left foot brake in the rs4 which would really help getting the rotation "just so" but hey, can't have everything.

Surprising on the Nordschleife (but I'm not a fan of that anyway).

I had a RS4 saloon and now have a C63 507 Coupe.

Merc is quicker than the RS4 but that is a comparison against a standard RS4 that isn't tuned and got 389 bhp on the MRC rolling road - My C63 has 507 bhp - I'm assuming no carbon issues and thats a lot more power.

Handling on the Merc in my opinion is very good, the front end is sharp but traction can be an issue in anything but dry conditions.

I still love my old RS4 but I am putting my hat in the Merc stable as the winner for this thread...

but then again, racing neck and neck not on a track, I'm sure they would be fairly closely matched.

Yes I have. I crushed a stock one twice in a run from 0-110 mph (at the dragstrip)

Another time, I lost to a tuned one with track tires by about 3 car lengths (also at the strip). He went 12.55 and12.68 while I went 12.82,12.85 on the two runs we had head to head. He mph'd better at 113-114 while I was around 108-109.

The first one, whom I beat soundly from a dig is typical of most c63 owners...they can't launch for <beep>.

I have also run with one on a straight section of 'the autobahn' and was giving up about 1-2 car lengths from around 50-115.

Finally I was behind one on an on ramp and heard him downshift (I was already in second waiting lol) and it took him so long before he could get on the power, I was shocked. I flew by him on the last bit of the curve where the other lanes opened up, but he was reeling me in once it straightened out. He had to wait for quite a bit longer than we as audi drivers do to get on it. It's a very different drive. I would love a c63 with the performance package and awd.

Some more things I've thought of. BTTC banned 4WD coz the A4 was walking it. Also after the yanks ruined it for all of us with the TT all fast Audi's are dialed in to under steer. This can be sorted with and arb change. My pref would be to change the rear for an 034 Motorsport item.

There is also a reason why the RS is still the getaway car of choice.

Kept crashing them because you could get the ass out so they recalled them and put much bigger bushes in the front wishbones to make it under steer.

Only come across one wanting to go for it. It was a while ago and I posted on here about it. 40 mph dual carriageway, wet and still light raining. My car was unmodified then. I got a good launch and pulled out a couple of car lengths, I think he lost traction. At forty I took my foot off and hit cruise control. He went past then slowed down and set himself to go again from 40 but I just laughed and pointed for him to carry on. Reckon he was very frustrated.

I tend not to push past the speed limit especially when its so low, if the car/bike can't beat me to the speed limit ahead then I feel that says what you need to about the car and driver. Its amazing how many guys on bikes get ready to go but don't set the revs and their bikes position shows they are going to cut you up. I guess it is because they are so used to being that much quicker.

On the same stretch going the other way a month or so ago had a silver four door c63 pull up at the lights next to me. He wound his window down to ask me if my exhaust was standard as the car sounded great. When the lights changed he pulled in behind me and followed me to the edge of town. Before he turned right at a later set of lights he asked me to give it a rev and he did the same thing at the same time. I was very happy with the fact I couldn't hear the Merc, He just looked across after and said "love it", gave a wave and turned right when the lights changed.

The second merc driver sounds a proper petrol head. I really enjoy it when others take an interest in a different car and appreciate it that people like different things. Unfortunately so rare these days...
