So I've just looked through some paperwork for the car and it had a 145 point check when I bought it in August including 'check all hoses for air and fluid leaks' this could get very interesting when I get some news about the fault :audibash:

so just cruising along
then a loud noise
no warning lights: ecl, low oil, etc.
then engine shuts off
???

did you check the oil level after this happened?

hopefully oil cooler hoses and you never ran dry/lost pressure
but the noise and shutdown is cause for concern

after the noise did it continue to make noise as it ran down? or only the initial noise then it stopped?

Hi Arthur,
Ye was just cruising then heard a loud noise like something may have fallen off? There was no warning lights at all, and the engine completely shut down/died at this time so I basically rolled in neutral to the next safest place to stop. I tried to start it once I parked and the smoke had calmed down but there was nothing and I checked the dipstick and it was reading empty :( I'm very concerned and after phoning Audi this morning they're on a bit of a backlog so haven't had chance to even inspect my motor as of yet

Martin

I see you're West Sussex as well. Which Audi dealer has it gone to?

Fingers crossed for you.

Hi,
Ye I'm West Sussex too, I've taken it to Portsmouth because that's the closest one to me in chichester, have you had any work done there? Because I really don't know what to expect until I get a phonecall. Where abouts in West Sussex are you?

Crawley Audi is my nearest dealer (I work in Crawley), but I had such a bad experience when I previously tried to buy an Audi TT from them that I refuse to use them. They're also quite a high hourly labout rate. Instead I use Five Oaks Audi, who are very friendly and helpful and reasonably priced (for a main dealer), although they don't see many RS4's so if it's anything more than basic servicing they do struggle to diagnose faults.

Five oaks is where I bought the car from in August, it was pretty expensive but came with a brand new service, the 145 point check I mentioned earlier, a years mot and 6 months tax and a very clean example for the year. It also came with a comprehensive warranty which I'm hoping covers me for whatever the outcome is.

For anyone that's taking a interest in my story I've just had a call from Audi and they have told me after a quick look on there ramp a conrod has gone through the bottom of the engine :( I am beyond gutted right now. They're doing some further investigation to see exactly what's damaged but it's looking very likely I'm going to need a new engine. He hasn't said whether my warranty covers it or not but has said if its mechanical failure then it will. Happy new year to me lol

I don't know anything about conrods but what could it be other than mechanical failure? You were cruising at the time and not caning it.

I've experienced the exact same thing. Audi gave me a new engine as a gesture of goodwill.

:( Well that would certainly explain the large puddle of oil under the car and the fact it wouldn't subsequently turn over on the starter. Will need to wait for their diagnosis. Total loss of oil from failed oil cooler could cause that, but so could several other things AFAIK.

At least you've got the warranty and therefore a good chance of getting it covered - particularly as you haven't owned it long and bought it from a main dealer. I bought mine privately almost 3 years ago and have no warranty......

I used them a couple of years ago when I worked only 100 yards away, was happy with their work (did DRC work as 100% goodwill even though I don't have FASH).

Did you buy the car from Audi within the last year? - if yes, then you'll be under the comprehensive used car warranty, which is about as good as it gets

If it's a rod, then I'm thinking you'll be fine - even the "watered down" named component warranty that you can opt for after your 1st year covers the engine under the general heading of "all internal components" or some such wording - a rod is a totally non serviceable part, and a failed one probably just means a bearing has given up the ghost - the only way an owner could possibly have caused damage is by running the engine without oil

Assuming it is a rod, then to be fair to the supplying dealer there'd be no way on earth they could have known, short of stripping down the engine and x-raying every component! - it's just one of those things :boohoo:

Good luck and keep us posted :beerchug:

even if he was thrashing it as long as it was not mechanically over-rev'ed, ie, shifting to a lower gear (missed 4th went to 2nd) and drove the rpm >8200 or so I would argue mechanical defect

the rod is part of the rotating assembly and should be covered if you have any warranty
even if you don't I would argue that it should be covered, this is a failure that should not happen due to wear, but only due to a defect of some sort (or a severe mechanical over rev)

a rod thru the block or oil pan is pretty bad
