Suspension crunching, grinding noise

Post by ScottRS4 » Fri Mar 17, 2023 1:14 am

Hi, long term member to the form but new to posting having only recently bought my first RS4 B7 Avant and loving it. Reason for the post, there’s a noise which sounds like a suspension issue, crunching, grinding (not knocking) sound coming from front off side, high up, dash level. The car has been converted to Bilsteins. It only happens when going over speed bumps or uneven road and only in cold weather. Seems to disappear once car is warmed up and doesn’t happen in warm weather. Took it to local Audi specialist but of course the fault didn’t happen so they couldn’t diagnose the fault. Has anybody have the same issue or heard of anything similar? Thanks

yup lots of noises from the suspension as ive been looking into this recently on my b8.

generally bushes and ball joints, arb's seem to be the issue. thankfully mine was just a dry arb bush

Is the car lower on the Bilsteins than stock?

My car was lowered slightly and was making bad suspension noises also. Was annoyed by scraping on everything so brought it to a suspension garage and had it raised 1cm. But my suspension has been totally quiet since then. Wish I’d tried that before throwing money at it (new arms, etc)!

Thanks AndyBrad and js47,
I’ll get the garage to check bushes, ball joints and arb’s next time it goes in for a service.
The car has been lowered so will look into that too.
Thanks for your help.
