Throttle body

Post by cherub72 » Mon Sep 27, 2021 5:01 pm

So, I put my car in for a service about 3 weeks ago and while it was in they did some paintwork, the alternator belt, a load of bushings, brake fluid change and a carbon clean. It's done 115k miles and this was the first carbon clean I know of and I've had the car 9 years.

Went to pick the car up from the garage and once my credit card had been spanked I started to drive home. When I was about 15 minutes down the road the car started running rough and the dash lit up with an EPC light and the ESP light. Pulled over and tried to call the garage but they had left for the day. Carried on driving and then the engine management light came on and the car lost all power. I switched it off and back on again and it started and ran but with all the lights on, while this was going on the brake pedal was super spongy.

Next followed a 90 minute trip that would normally take 30 minutes where the car just kept dropping power and not responding to the throttle, not very nice when you are halfway across a junction.

Finally got home and parked the car and used a selection of bad words then phoned the garage the next morning. Fair play to them they sent a truck to pick the car up and took it away.

Just called them and they say the issue is the throttle body and it needs a new one, they are on back order and pretty expensive

Anyone else think that the throttle body breaking when they have had it off the car to do the carbon clean is a bit too much of a coincidence?

It’s a bit of a coincidence but then again with 115k miles not unexpected, you can source these from:

https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/stand ... +body,6472

Here in the US a few of our owners have used this one (given the shortage there is) and its exactly the same and adapts fine contrary to others that are out there. You can also perform a search for:

STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS S20002

and see if something comes up closer to home, talk with your garage and good luck

Got an update for this. The garage cleaned out the throttle body again and it now seems to be happy. They cleaned it as part of the carbon clean and calibrated it but there must have been some gunk in it somewhere that caused it to mess up.
While researching throttle body suppliers I found out that ECU Testing will rebuild one for £150 so that is a good backup plan if it goes wobbly again

Good info there, thanks for sharing.

How is the DRC holding up after its refresh?
My one should be back on DRC early next year.

Your old (temporary) seats are still going well!

DRC is fine, thanks for asking. I've also had new rear springs, because one broke, and all the bushings done as they were starting to perish.

Unusual to hear about someone going back to DRC, why the change?

I took it for the first proper run out on Friday after the carbon clean and it's a huge difference, I hadn't realised how much it was down on power as it happens gradually. I think it's the first ever carbon clean it has had, I've owned it for 10 years and never got round to it so once every 109,000 miles isn't too bad.

Good to hear hear the seats are still in use, I need to get mine looked at as the drivers side bolster on the seat back has split so will need a bit of attention, hopefully Mike who did your seats is still in business as he seems to know his stuff
