Trups DRL kit - poor quality

Post by Pistolpete2543 » Sun Jun 25, 2017 7:10 pm

Have to say I'm well pissed off. I'm one of the many on here who bought a Trups DRL kit for my b7 RS4. After waiting more than 6 months for them to arrive, the first set were replaced and now I've had the latest set fitted for less than 8 weeks and I'm getting DIS warning every 20 seconds to a minute for a LHS headlight bulb fault. Obviously there is a loose connection somewhere, which to be honest I thought when I first got them as I actually put some insulating tape on a connector on the RHS kit as it felt too loose.

Ultimately I think the quality of the product is just not there for a car of this calibre, and I'm forewarning other forum members that long term reliability of these units could become a problem. I'm going to remove mine (again) and check the connectors to see if I can sort the fault. If not they're going back to original, which is a shame cos I love the look of the LED bulbs.

Rant over, but I'd be interested to hear if others have had issues with these?

I have to agree, the wiring quality is poor especially considering the price paid. For what is being asked, I expected a fully developed product with top notch build quality. The wiring lengths are far longer than needed and the quality of the wiring and the soldering leaves a lot to be desired.

Trups in fairness has always offered me a refund, but I want LED drl's so I am living with them. They are not worth the money being asked though in my opinion.

Never had an issue with mine. Although Trups fitted mine for me, so maybe it's an installation issue?

so maybe it's an installation issue?
You can't really go wrong with the installation to be honest, old bulbs out & new connectors plugged in & fit new LED unit into DRL position in the lamp unit.

Trups DRL kit - poor quality

Honestly don't understand why so many people are having issues. Installed mine 6-8 months ago.. not a single problem. Touch on wood.

Maybe there was a bad batch with faulty wiring or resistors. I don't know.

Sorry all, only just seen this.

Pete and Simon and anyone else who may be getting a fault on the dis, I have another fix and hopefully the final fix for this error, a canceller was changed to fix the error when on but was not calculated for when the drl was off so had to get a larger one built in.

From batch 1 (sept 2016) out of 50 sets I have had 3 problems with cancellers, never a bulb/driver fail so reliability I know is there.

Batch 2 was Feb 2017 and was 25 sets, improvements to connectors and interchangeable parts so if something was wrong it was easy to diagnose and only the part that was faulty would be swapped out rather than new bulbs. From this batch Pete had a set sent to him that where tested but the drl side did not work, returned to me and work on a 12v, I put that set in another car as I was overhauling his headlights and they have been fine and no reported problems, he has even done a couple of ring trips so that was a strange one.

Batch 3 was April, 25sets, now this batch is the one that has really tested me, the 1156 bayonet connector in particular. Sent out, used for a few hours then the drl would no work, found to be a wire coming loose at the solder stopping power getting to the driver, replaced with a new connector to those who report drl not working and resolved.

If the DRL function stops working it's the little bayonet connector which I can send out, if you are getting the error main beam then it's the cancellers which is been produced and I'm pushing to have them here week 2 Jul which will be a fix for anyone who has bought a drl kit, will be a plug and play fix for all 3 batches. Once that's done and it's good only then will I have another batch produced.

Any questions or any improvements you may think could be done then let me know.

I must need the updated cancellers now then, as the actual DRL lights are on continuously but the main beam fault keeps coming on and going off every few seconds which is driving me crazy.

I did have an issue with my DRL's (must have been one of the 50 to fail) and Trups has been most accommodating and has sent me out new parts no questions asked. He has also just helped me out with a new project and it has been an absolute pleasure working with him. I would recommend his products and services. If anyone has problems with his products I would say to go straight to him and he will sort it out as he did with me.....

I also had a couple of issues when the garage tried to fit the LED's for me. However like jonytek I also found Trups was very responsive (replied within minuted to my PM) and sent through pictures as well as offering to speak to garage directly to sort, which he did. All done and they look great so I also wouldn't hesitate to recommend him or his products.

And after dealing with him on this upgrade he really knows what he's doing.

Trups has been great to me too, I like the look his latest upgraded DRL's and other LED's have made.
