Alright lads?
So as part of the build that I've got going on I'm planning on getting the car up to MRC for a tune, c/clean and a couple of other bits. I do want them to check out the gearbox and clutch while it's up there. I haven't been able to get them on the phone all week so thought I'd ask here regarding the gearbox issue. From stop it can be difficult the get into both first and reverse, it's not horrible nor does it grind but just requires a bit more force but when the engine is off it's smooth as as baby ass. I don't think that it's an uncommon issue but as I'm trying to budget things I'd like to know if anyone's had similar issues and what the out come is. Is it possibly a synkro issue requiring a rebuild, could it be a clutch issue or maybe a slave cylinder issue??
I should probably mention that the clutch feels solid with no slipping.
I'm planning a few long road trips through Europe so need to get any issues sorted..

Sounds like clutch issue, syncro comes into play when changing up or down the gears while travelling as it aligns the independent gearbox shaft speeds to make the gears join smoothly and not crunch, what is it like trying to engage any other gear at stand still.
Standing still you should be able to select gear with relative ease

Definitely sounds like your clutch, the self adjusting pressure plate will have reached the end of the adjustment making it tricky to engage gear. I had the same symptoms, with no slipping or juddering of the clutch. Changed the whole lot inc DMF & it's a joy to use again.

Ok, well at least it's not a gearbox rebuild. That's good news. Any idea what MRC will charge for the work not including parts?

78,000 so it's probably due. There were no receipts for the clutch when I purchased it so can only assume it hasn't been done.
Is it worth going for something more heavy duty, I plan on getting MRC to map in their launch control and do plan on using it

I have a little problem when cold engaging 1st. When i read up about it it seemed a common fault.

It's a combination of clutch and flywheel, either one being worn can lead to this, so make sure you do both to avoid having to take the box off twice.

New clutch needed mate I reckon. I had exactly the same issue, (ask Ilya, lol) and now it's replaced it's fine. MRC quoted me 2k for clutch and flywheel I think, somewhere around there anyway.
Then comes the boring part of running the clutch in for 500 miles! I only lasted 200 miles before a Z4
made me take a few miles off the new clutch, lol, was a nice smell afterwards. Still, at least I know my car is limited now.

Interesting guys. I have just had a conversation with the guys over at AMD and they are saying that this could quite potentially be an internal gb issue. They say that usually a clutch will start to stick to the floor when it's on it's way out and it's unusual for it to just be difficult getting into a couple of gears.
Si you say the same issue - was it just difficult getting into 1st, 2nd and rev? From memory you were talking about it slipping.

I had this problem with first and reverse, change of clutch and it went away. Mine was the flywheel had cracks in it, annoying as it had only done 25k and not been given a hard life

Yep just 1st, 2nd and reverse. It did slip once, in 4th at high speed and high revs, 100+. I asked my indi and they said it was just clutch, which was replaced and been fine since. Hope it isn't internal!Let me know how you get on.

MIne is similar but only when cold, 1st and reverse are harder to engage, if I pump the clucth a few times it eases and then once its warm it fine, 36,000 miles and original clutch.

Mine is hard 1st to 2nd only first 1or2nd times you shift only, when really cold.. always though it was down to JHM short shift.
