B8.5 S4 to B7 RS4

Hi chaps,

I've currently got a 65 plate S4, but still can't help feeling that I should have gone down the B7 RS4 route. As a happy 'man maths' coincidence, I have persuaded my wife that by getting rid of the S4 for an 'older' audi it will be cheaper blah blah blah.

Effectively I'm finding excuses to get an RS4.
The thing is, it's going to get used and abused - i.e kids in the back, wellies etc in the boot and the interior will be covered in raisins before long, so there is no point me buying one as a potential investment, I just want something that's been well looked after which will give me a few years of enjoyment.

Buckets are out of the question as my wife whines about the bolsters on the standard S4 seats and the only other options I need are f&r parking sensors. Anything else is a bonus.

I've seen this one (below) but is it a leap of faith buying at this end of the market? Does anyone know the car?!

Any help greatly appreciated.

(Oh and if anyone wants to do a deal for an 18month old S4 then I'm all ears, otherwise it will go to a dealer as they all seem a bit keen)

The car in question looks good, use the fact it's got the comfort seats as a negotiation point and job done.


Same owner for last 7 years bodes well, just make sure all the usual recalls have been carried out or factor into the price.

Its your personal choice ofc, but once i've had a B8 (s4 or rs4) no way i could go back to the old tech of the B7.

The b7 is a great drivers car but its 10 years old and it shows it now

Personally I'd hold onto your S4 and maybe wait until the B8 RS4 comes into range if you want the RS badge. The B8 has tech that is well above the B7, I'm not a massive tech guy though and, having fitted a Miltek zortst, I just love the V8 burble. My B8 Allroad is a very 'complete' vehicle in a luxurious sense that the B7 just isn't because it's 10 years old now, however. Get a map on the S4 if you want to push the power but if I was in your position and with the family constraints you mention, I'd hold the S4.

Thanks for the responses. The tech doesn't bother me in the slightest, I just want (need) a v8 back in my life. I think my wife might struggle though as she loves the Stronic.

I guess I need to go and spend a bit of time in one. The b8 RS4 is less appealing simply because I know the S4 with a pulley change and tune will be a quicker car. It's more the pull of v8/manual box that I keep coming back to.

And no, the S4 with map will not get close to an RS. Give it 500brake and it still wont be close on twisties or a track

And the B8 RS4 wins overall by a country mile

Your S4 looks beautiful, but I think the B7 RS4 just has so much more road presence. The Mugello Blue example you've linked to is worth a look for sure. Can't believe the dealer didn't tidy up that engine bay though. Best thing is go look at and drive a few at various price points, then decide if you can live with an older car.

I like the look of your S4 . If the RS4 is the car you want get shot of the S4 before you lose more money on it .

I've not driven a new Audi to compare , but I love a Manual and hate the thought of anything else

The RS4 will hold its value now ,I've seen many with 120k on the clock for over £15,000 and I bet most of them drive like they have 50k on the clock. A well built car

Where is the 'won't be able to sell it' point on mileage do you reckon?
I.e if I buy a leggy one with 120k and put another 20k on it in 2 years, will it be completely unsellable?

Agreed, this looks like a nice example that's been well cared for. Depends what maintenance has been done though as it could be coming around again for brakes/clutch/tyres at that mileage. For about £2-3k more, you could have a 70-85k mile example that's just had these items completed.

It will feel like a Stone Age relic after your current car....never mind maintenance costs and problems.

These cars are built to be used and will see 200k with ease. There not made to be parked up looking pretty

There was one a few months back with 220k on their clock for £12495 .

Take extra care to look inside both the front and rear arches. Had my front wings replaced (80% Audi, 20% me) as they were bubbling from the inside outwards.

Now the rears are going the same way......

Only way to really fix the rears is to have new quarter panels welded in and that is just under 3k from a non-Audi garage.

Granted, my car has done 150k but it is still under 12 years old so hopefully Audi will cover some of the cost again.

So yes, mechanically these cars will run for at least 250k but given we grit our roads for a third of the year, expect some body work repairs at somepoint.

Having said that, still the best 6 years of car ownship ever. You don't need 'tech' when you can play that manual V8 like a musical instrument!
