2nd Hand prices

Post by Stairs » Tue Sep 27, 2016 8:03 pm

The time has come to hand on my beloved car to another. It's going to hurt. A lot.

I have been looking at the 2nd hand market, the cheapest around are listing at around the £15k mark, but trade in is at £11k.

My car has over 120,000 miles, in good nick and new tyres, just serviced etc.. Are they actually selling around the 15k mark, or is this wishful thinking on the sellers part?

I got £14.2k for mine a couple of months back with 128k on the clock. Had it up at 15 ininitailly bit had no interest so dropped to £14.5k and then did a bit of negotiation on the final selling price. I do feel if I held out I could have got more but was happy it went within a month and to a good home

Condition and history is the key factor, 14.5 to 15k is about right if the car is in good condition, have seen a few cat d write offs make decent money

prices are very good for hpi clear examples
11k is a pisstake-you would get more than that on ebay, gumtree fairly quickly-dont think i have ever seen one below 14k for quite some while[unless recorded]
even then they seem to ask 16k ish for cat d

I once worked for Mercedes and went to Stuttgart and walked through a warehouse with hundreds of engines wrapped up in pallets. I asked my German colleague what all these were. He smiled and said, you English at stupid, here in German we buy a quality expensive car and when the engine pops we put a new one in and that's what these are for. A well serviced car which is well looked after with high miles is better than a 70k car with knackered DRC, Oil cooler, Ancillary Radiators, Clutch and fly wheel etc etc. These cars are good for 250K looked after.

If you can wait go for 15k, but it's a strange world as if you drop it £500 people will start calling as they are too shy to barter with you.

Good luck with your sale.

Clearly the krauts dont spend 5 months a year covering there roads with salt then, beyond taxis there are very few cars where the body will last 250k

just putting my two pence worth in here, and ive been watching the market for a while now as i too am going to be selling mine when i am back from being away in a couple weeks. mine has full history in good condition with 75K and having just been fully serviced including brakes im going to be putting it up for 16500-17000 ono, its true there are some ridiculous prices online for peoples cars and it really is what the other person is willing offer.

thankfully i think these cars have held their money a little better than a lot of the other crap around!
