SD card reader
SD card reader
I want to use the SD card slots for my music but I've tried with a card I have about 2gb of music on and for some reason it won't read it. Any experience with using these anyone please?
Re: SD card reader
Hi,
pre 2010 RNS-e's have a 4gb sdcard size limit & post 2010 RNS-e's have a 32gb limit.
I guess, if you haven't updated the RNS-e then you will have a pre 2010 model.

Re: SD card reader
Ahh, so even if I only have 2gb on the card it can't be a bigger card than 4gb?
Re: SD card reader
Yep, correct..ChrisR wrote:Ahh, so even if I only have 2gb on the card it can't be a bigger card than 4gb?
Re: SD card reader
Also, it has to be SD not SDHC.
Re: SD card reader
Hi all. Tried searching to see what the latest thread is on this topic of RNS-E and SD cards and this one wins.
I've had the first generation ("192") RNS-E in my B7 since I got it, the one with the CD/TV button, and only just today after 14 years of owning it have discovered https://rnse.pcbbc.co.uk/
This is still getting developed and updated in 2024 and I think for the price he's charging (15 GBP) it is utterly amazing what he has done, especially for the Gen1 units.
Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with the developer, I'm not sponsored by this or anything like that, I'm not getting paid to post this. I literally went down a google/forum rabbit hole today trying to get stuff going for my raspberry pi Android Auto project and found this on an Audi TT forum where they just love messing with RNS-E units.
So yeah today I stumbled across this software, managed to get it loaded onto the head unit, and now I have:
- full support for 32gig SDHC cards in both slots (I'm even running microSD cards inside an adapter perfectly)
- radio station logos on all Irish/UK radio stations
- huge improvement in mp3 capacity and artwork displaying for every album
- scrolling song titles on the DIS
- digital speedo displaying on DIS below the compass
- 2020 maps running off the sd card - no disc needed
I think this is absolutely unreal that someone has developed this so well. The guides on the website are top notch and everything just.... works. So rare these days. There's even a free utility that will scan your SD card and apply all the artwork file conversion properly.
Hardest part of it all was finding a CD-R to burn to get the firmware updated loaded onto the head unit! Had to dig out an old dusty computer with a burner drive in it and find a burnable CD. At least a decade since I've tackled that. The guide on website says to use CD-R and not DVD-R but I'll come clean and admit I didn't have any CD-R/RW lying around and chanced it with a DVD-R and it did work.
Maybe I'm very late to the party and everybody knows about this but for those that don't I'm putting this up here. Absolutely worth the afternoon of tinkering to get it going. It has breathed new life in my very dated RNS-E unit and I'm chuffed.

Re: SD card reader
Sounds cool and certainly better than the out of the box features of the 192 RNSE but surely still better to just swap in a Gen2 with the Media button?
Because you're still limited to using SD cards whereas with the Gen2 you can use Bluetooth & Spotify without losing the OE look. Other than the Media button, it is identical to the 192 unit from a visual perspective.

Re: SD card reader
Price and difficulty to find. It was always a long term goal to swap out to a 193 but this is a nice interim. And I've got a kind of Android Auto thing going with that screen above it that runs via the AUX of the RNSe
Re: SD card reader
Fair enough. Worth noting the 193 out of a Seat Exeo fits and has the nice matte black surround the same as the OE 192, so it is identical other than the Media button. These seem to go for much less than the 193 out of the A3/TT which come with the horrible gloss black surround.
I got lucky and managed to get an Exeo one for £100 and sold my 192 for £150 so actually profitied from it! But yeah worth keeping your eyes peeled on the Exeo ones if you do fancy upgrading in the future.
