MRC Stage 2 remap - Is Milltek needed?

Post by Briggy » Mon May 11, 2015 4:42 pm

Hi,

Had my RS4 for a few weeks. Biggest regret is not buying one sooner! Starting to get used to things and wondering about a few changes. My car has an MRC Stage 2 remap and a Milltek catback non-reonsated exhaust system, which the previous owner had done. Struggling to live with the everyday noise - great when you're pushing it, but becoming tedious when sitting just above 2,000rpm and listening to it booming. Anyway, my question - is the Milltek exhaust required to get the full benefit on the the remap or is it just there to change the sound of the exhaust?

Cheers,
Bryan

just sound mate, you could buy some resonated sections to help quieten it down a bit. the stage 2 will remain whatever pipes you have on the back.

Mine has a MRC stage 2 map with standard exhaust. My cats have been gutted, all that Doug recommended was I got some Miltek decat downpipes as whoever had gutted mine hadn't done the tidiest of jobs! never mentioned a full system.

I had the same setup done by MRC a couple of years ago but just couldn't live with the drone from 1000-2400rpm so I got MRC to swap the Milltek centre section to a resonated one last year, and the drone is greatly reduced - there's still more than with the OE exhaust but I can now use the whole 1000-8600 rpm rev range again.

So it sounds like my choices are either swap for a standard exhaust (which would probably mean money coming my way) or get a resonated centre section. Would I be right in thinking that stock wouldn't drone or boom, but the resonated centre section would drone but not boom? The drone itself doesn't bother me, but the booming does.

Cheers,
Bryan

I have the standard exhaust mate and whilst it is nice and quiet it does lack that bit of V8 luster that you get with the Miltek. For me it's a bit to quiet. I think from what i have heard the resonated Miltek is good middle ground.

I have a resonated Miltek with high flow cats and can live quite happily with the slight drone that only really is noticeable to me between 1800 and 2000.

Briggy. If you head down to Bristol from Gloucestershire anytime, you're welcome to hear what it is like, side by side.

How much have people paid for the resonated centre section?

I will have resonated centre pipes sitting redundant shortly - I have non-resonated pipes in transit to me at present.

You are welcome to make use of them if you so wish. Perfectly serviceable condition; only the exterior looks rather poor as we all know Milltek material quality isn't perhaps the best money can buy.

Once they are off the car, I will take some photos and send them to you if you are interested. Here's hoping I don't have to cut them to get them off the existing system.

EDIT: same applies to OP. Got mixed up there.

Thankfully I don't need to use the car for anything other than 'spirited' driving, no traffic or commute in the car so the non-res shouldn't bother me as much as it may bother others. I also have valved back-boxes which should reduce the drone if It ever becomes too much.

You can definitely work around drone with gear choice. Most aftermarket exhausts drone at a certain rpm.
