420PS = 414BHP

Post by gavsteryoung » Wed Mar 23, 2005 5:41 pm

Just been reading about the worlds largest Derv engine and found out that 1PS = 1.0139BHP so with a quick calculation got the above figure....

So even less power......

Do people know if PS is the unit quoted for other models....

Was just interesting......

If 1PS = 1.0139BHP then 420PS = 420x1.0139 = 425.83BHP :D

Car manufacturers always want the big numbers so do you all really think they would be advertising with 420PS if it was really 425bhp. :roll:

Try sticking 420PS in to this Converter and you'll see that the real bhp is only 414.25 :wink:

Audi got away with quoting German horsepower (PS) as bhp for a few years before some bright spark pointed out that it was'nt. Thus I'm not sure whether the B5 S4 was really 265bhp or 261 bhp or the RS4 380bhp or 375bhp. Won't sleep tonight now!

Ops look like I got things Arse about Face, but I think you all got the idea.....

With such big BHP numbers already im sure a loss of 4 on the S4 wont matter but hey, I thought it was funny and a common misconception that PS and BHP were the same......

This is all just one more reason why we should stop quoting peak power figures and look at the torque curve instead!

Is that torque in Ft Lb to match your BHP or in Nm as quoted by most people? :lol:

Audi quotes power in kW, then it offers a translation into horsepower in the most extravagent form around, PS, which is something like bhp (DIN). The US also uses bhp but their units are SAE. SAE bhp<> DIN bhp.
Much easier when the whole world uses SI.
Audi are not alone in using pony units for horse power.
