Development work on the 4.2 v8?

Post by TarmacTerrorist » Sat Mar 19, 2005 7:18 am

Anybody know who's done all the leg work on the engine for the new rs4? I haven't heard much about this yet other than it has been developed from a race bred engine, so was just wondering?

Something is telling me though this one is all down to Audi, unlike it's predecessors which had Cosworth to thank, and of course Porsche with the rs2 before them.

Thinking about it, this may actually be the real reason for the 'love factor' of these cars, that little bit of magic that Audi themselves just couldn't give it.

btw.
Does Audi still own it's arm of Cosworth, thought I heard something about it being sold off??

Audi has sold Cosworth Technology.
"Race bred" is marketing talk for "Baretsky kept an eye on the developments".
I can't think of any serious racing this engine has done, and please don't say World Speed Challenge, i don't have a cup of cold sick handy.
Audi is very clever at designing engines which have wide torque bands and can rev. Compare the characteristics of the BMW V10 and the Audi V10. The Audi engine does things its not supposed to do, lots of torque and matches the BMW engine for revs. I believe that I would rather race the Audi engine, it will be easier to drive and much kinder in the wet under racing conditions. Both of these engines will be seen in GT racing in years to come.
The Audi V10 and V8 engines have some family resemblances and are built on the same bore centres.
